IgE antibodies to gal-α-1,3-gal-β-1,4-GlcNAc (α-gal) can mediate a novel form of delayed anaphylaxis to red meat. Although IgG antibodies to α-gal (anti-α-gal or anti-Gal) are widely expressed in humans, IgE anti-α-gal is not. We explored the relationship between the IgG and IgE responses to both α-gal and the related blood group B antigen. Contradicting previous reports, antibodies to α-gal we...

Pig immunoglobulins The pig immunoglobulin system has now been well characterized and has been the subject of two recent reviews (Bourne, 1971a; Porter & Allen, 1972). Three immunoglobulin classes are recognized which on the basis of their physicochemical properties and antigenic relationships may be regarded as analogous to human IgG, IgM and IgA. Some of the properties of pig immunoglobulins ...

Responses to prepartum injection of sows with Se and vitamin E (E) were evaluated by determining immunoglobulin (IgA, IgM, IgG) levels in the colostrum and serum of the sows and the serum of their offspring. Fifty-four sows (40 multiparous, 14 primiparous) receiving diets adequate in E and Se according to current NRC (1988) standards were randomly allotted to four treatment groups in which a si...

Fibronectin-binding protein I (SfbI) of Streptococcus pyogenes binds to mouse immunoglobulin G (IgG) but not to IgA or IgM in a nonimmune fashion. The fibronectin-binding domains of SfbI were responsible for this activity, which was targeted to the IgG F(ab')(2) fragment. SfbI also binds to B cells but not to CD4(+) or CD8(+) lymphocytes.

We have found that bile is a useful source of secretory IgA (scIgA) which can specifically neutralize influenza virus infectivity. Using purified scIgA, we compared the mechanism of neutralization with that mediated by IgA monomers (prepared from scIgA by differential reduction) and IgG. At 4 degrees C, scIgA prevented the attachment of neutralized virus, while neither monomeric IgA nor IgG had...

Anti-glycan antibodies are an abundant subpopulation of serum antibodies with critical functions in many immune processes. Changes in the levels of these antibodies can occur with the onset of disease, exposure to pathogens, or vaccination. As a result, there has been significant interest in exploiting anti-glycan antibodies as biomarkers for many diseases. Serum contains a mixture of anti-glyc...

An immunochromatographic test for the rapid determination of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG antibodies to Burkholderia pseudomallei was evaluated by using sera from bacteriologically confirmed melioidosis patients and high-risk and clinically suspected patients, along with disease control groups. The sensitivities were 100 and 93% for the IgG and IgM tests, respectively, while the specificity w...

To whom correspondence should be addressed. Despite a number of studies extending over the last 10 years the exact number of IgGt oligosaccharide chains, oligosaccharide type and sequence remains controversial (Abel el al., 1968). In addition, rigorous studies of species, allotype and sub-class related differences have not yet been performed. Oligosaccharide units have been reported to be prese...
