母乳は，児にとって最良の栄養であり，児の健やかな成長や発達にとって必要なすべての成分が含まれている。母乳には未だ明らかとなっていない成分や機能が数多く存在し，その未知なる機能を明らかにするために世界中で研究が続けられている。一方，乳児用調製乳は様々な理由で母乳哺育ができない児に対して母乳代替食品として与えられている。そのため，乳児用調製乳をより良いものに作り上げていくにあたっては，母乳をより深く知ることが重要である。我々はおおよそ30年間隔で全国規模の母乳調査研究を実施している。本稿では，我々がこれまでに実施してきた研究の歴史を振り返るとともに，最新の母乳調査で得られた知見について解説する。
