Infection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) has been demonstrated to be a crucial event in the vertical transmission of viruses, and it is known that hepatitis C virus (HCV) can infect PBMNCs. The relationship between vertical transmission of HCV and the presence of positive and negative strands of HCV-RNA in the PBMNCs of HCV-carrier mothers was investigated using reverse transcri...

giardiasis caused by the intestinal flagellate giardia duodenalis. it is postulated that animals may be a reservoir for human infection and vice versa, thus, giardiasis classified as a zooanthroponotic disease. therefore, accurate information about the giardia infection in animals can help the control and prevention of disease in human. with respect to considerable population of cats in iran an...

Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) is a gram-negative bacterium that has infected more than half of the world's population. This pathogen colonizes the human gastric mucosa and is usually acquired during childhood. It is an important cause of peptic ulcers, chronic gastritis and stomach cancer. Among the risk factors for acquisition of H. pylori infection, poor socioeconomic status, poor sanitizati...

To identify parameters of Leishmania infection within a population of infected sand flies that reliably predict subsequent transmission to the mammalian host, we sampled groups of infected flies and compared infection intensity and degree of metacyclogenesis with the frequency of transmission. The percentage of parasites within the midgut that were metacyclic promastigotes had the highest corre...

To investigate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection in horses, a total of 200 fecal specimens were collected randomly from five farms in Tehran. Samples were taken during a year, 50 specimens each season. Of these specimens, 57 were obtained from Caspian Pony. The presence of oocysts in the samples was confirmed by modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining of direct smears of the fecal material fr...

Background and Aim:The new coronavirus - 2 is known to be a major threat to public health around the world. Common ways of transmitting the virus include direct transmission (sneezing, coughing and inhaling infected droplets and aerosols) and contact transmission (oral mucosa, nose and conjunctiva). When dental services are provided, large amounts of aerosols are produced during working with eq...

We discuss the interactions between mother and infant that influence the transmission of HIV. Potential routes of infection are identified, and maternal and infant risk factors for transmission are explored. The role of the immune system in controlling HIV infection in the infant is discussed. Finally, preventive measures for reducing vertical transmission are proposed and evaluated.

Results The results showed a majority of cases of non-B subtypes: subtype G 42%, subtype B 24%, subtype C 14%, CRF02_AG 12%, subtypes A, D, CRFO3_BG and CRF01_AE 2%. Comparative study of the different subtypes showed epidemiological differences: •Subtype G: 81,6% of women of Portuguese origin, 14,4% of African origin, with 76% of infection acquired by sexual transmission and 23,8% by intravenou...

Phylogenies of highly genetically variable viruses such as HIV-1 are potentially informative of epidemiological dynamics. Several studies have demonstrated the presence of clusters of highly related HIV-1 sequences, particularly among recently HIV-infected individuals, which have been used to argue for a high transmission rate during acute infection. Using a large set of HIV-1 subtype B pol seq...
