The KT tumor is a transplantable strain of a human Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated gastric carcinoma (EBVaGC), established in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice, with which the cytokine expression of EBVaGC can be investigated without interference from the infiltrating lymphocytes. As a part of a high-density oligonucleotide array (GeneChip) analysis of EBVaGC, the interleukin-1be...

The annexin lipocortin 1 is reported to mediate some anti-inflammatory effects of glucocorticoids, but the mechanisms of this mediation are incompletely understood. The involvement of lipocortin 1 in glucocorticoid inhibition of monocyte interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta) release has been investigated. Treatment of peripheral blood monocytes with 2 mug/ml lipopolysaccharide potently increased IL-1bet...

We describe a child with very late-onset group B Streptococcus sepsis and meningitis, systemic shigellosis, and chronic osteomyelitis. Peripheral blood cells obtained from the patient and her brother did not respond to stimulation with either interleukin-1beta or lipopolysaccharide. Sequencing of the interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase-4 gene revealed 2 novel mutations.

A growing body of evidence suggests that the interleukin-1 system is involved in periovulatory events. Previous work from our lab demonstrated that in the mare, interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) increases the ovulatory rate of metaphase II oocytes. The present study was conducted to analyze in vivo the effect of IL-1 on oocyte cytoplasmic maturation, ovulation and pregnancy rate. In the present work...

Addition of Shiga toxin 2 to human bone marrow or cord blood cell culture induced macrophage-granulocyte colonies. Although Shiga toxin 2 alone induced colonies mainly composed of macrophages, it induced colonies mainly consisting of granulocytes when combined with physiological doses of interleukin-1beta, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, or stem cell factor with interleukin-3.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by cerebral aneurysm rupture remains a life-threatening emergency despite advances in treatment. However, the mechanisms underlying aneurysm initiation, progression, and rupture remain unclear. We developed a method to induce experimental cerebral aneurysms in rats, monkeys, and mice. Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) is a key inflammatory mediat...

Endemic pemphigus foliaceus (EPF) is an autoimmune disease characterized by blister formation with a loss of cohesion and infiltration of inflammatory cells. We observed that supernatants of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients produced significantly more interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) than those from stimulated healthy controls. Furthermore, a Th2 bias was observed in EPF patients wh...

The cytokine interleukin (IL)-1beta is a key mediator of the inflammatory response and has been implicated in the pathophysiology of acute and chronic inflammation. IL-1beta is synthesized in response to many stimuli as an inactive pro-IL-1beta precursor protein that is further processed by caspase-1 into mature IL-1beta, which is the secreted biologically active form of the cytokine. Although ...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible involvement of human peripheral blood monocytes in the pathology of hypertensive disease. We determined the in vitro secretion patterns of proinflammatory cytokines obtained from isolated peripheral monocytes from normal controls and from hypertensive patients either after in vitro stimulation with angiotensin II (Ang II) with or without...

Addition of a monoclonal antibody which binds the Cryptococcus neoformans capsule to suspensions of human monocytes, T lymphocytes, and cryptococcal cells (i) enhances interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), tumor necrosis factor alpha, and IL-2 production; (ii) reduces IL-10 secretion; and (iii) promotes T-cell proliferation. The ability of specific antibody to influence cytokine production and lymphopr...
