In this paper a quantitative description of German intonation is presented. It will be demonstrated that intonation contours can be efficiently analyzed, and predicted, by interpreting the components and parameters of Fujisaki’s model in terms of linguistic features and categories. It will also be argued that a superpositionally organized model is particularly suitable for a quantitatve descrip...

Modeling speaker-specific intonation is important in several areas, including speaker identification, verification, and imitation using text-to-speech synthesis. However the choice of the intonation model and the estimation of its parameters from spontaneous speech remains a challenge. We propose a way to estimate speaker-specific intonation parameters for a particular superpositional model, th...

This paper discusses the gender difference in the English intonation patterns used by native speakers of English from sociophonetic and functional perspectives with a preliminary corpus-based experimental study. The main purpose of this research is to dig out the possible reasons of gender difference in intonation usage with social and cultural impacts. The research isolates gender as the major...

This paper presents a new method of the stylization of intonation contours, which is the first step towards developing an intonation model for application in Polish unit selection speech synthesis. The paper starts with an overview of the existing F0 stylization algorithms underlying various intonation models followed by an overview of descriptions of Polish intonation. Then the assumptions beh...

the source of energy for playing aerophones is the air that is conducted through the instrument via the lips of the player. despite the fact that the function of the respiratory system is consistent among all players, the method of blowing varies from one instrument to another. every instrument, and more specifically, every player must find the most appropriate method of utilizing the lips vis-...

The present paper demonstrates that much can be learned about intonation through the study of the contribution of lexical tones to the f0 contour of speech utterances. A fundamental principle and several basic mechanisms of tone production and perception are proposed based on studies of both tone and intonation. Their implications for intonation in general are discussed.

This article presents the intonation system of Korean and English analyzed in the same theoretical framework (autosegmental-metrical phonology of intonation). The role of prosody in sentence processing is discussed focusing on the similarities and differences between the intonation systems of these two languages. Future research directions are suggested at the end.

This paper proposes two algorithms for generating intonation from a mixed CART-HMM intonation model for speech synthesis. Based either on a Viterbi search or on the Expectation-Maximization algorithm, the two generation algorithms are analyzed in terms of likelihood and F0 Root Mean Square Error. Listening tests are performed to subjectively evaluate the quality of the generated intonation.
