Heat transfer mechanisms and the solidification process are simulated for a continuous casting machine and the geometric shape of the liquid pool is predicted considering different conditions. A heat transfer and solidification model is described for the continuous casting of steel slabs. The model has been established on the basis of the technical conditions of the slab caster in the con...

The ice-rich south polar layered deposits of Mars were probed with the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding on the Mars Express orbiter. The radar signals penetrate deep into the deposits (more than 3.7 kilometers). For most of the area, a reflection is detected at a time delay that is consistent with an interface between the deposits and the substrate. The reflected powe...

The derivation of a local mobility model for symmetrical ultra-thin DGSOI nMOSFETs is outlined. A local-field variant is found to reproduce the dependencies of the quantummechanical mobility on silicon slab thickness and normal field with a maximum error of 10%. The model can be used with the density-gradient approach.

Abstract The repeated slab approach has become a de facto standard to accurately describe surface properties of materials by density functional theory calculations with periodic boundary conditions. For exhibiting spontaneous polarization, we show that the conventional scheme passivation pseudo hydrogen is unable realize charge-neutral surface. presence net charge induces via Gauss’s law macros...

Although the flux density map of a bulk superconductor provides in principle sufficient information for calculating the magnitude and the direction of the supercurrent flow, the inversion of the Biot–Savart law is ill conditioned for thick samples, thus rendering this method unsuitable for state of the art bulk superconductors. If a thin (<1 mm) slab is cut from the bulk, the inversion is reaso...

Data collected from shake table tests of two, approximately one-third scale, two story flat plate frames utilizing shear reinforcement, as well as data from prior tests, were evaluated to assess the inter-story drift ratios when punching failures occur for reinforced concrete and post-tensioned slab-column connections with and without shear reinforcement. The drift ratios at punching for the sh...

We present a new method, in the following called MMM2D, to accurately calculate the electrostatic energy and forces on charges being distributed in a two dimensional periodic array of finite thickness. It is not based on an Ewald summation method and as such does not require any fine-tuning of an Ewald parameter for convergence. We transform the Coulomb sum via a convergence factor into a serie...

The purpose of this research to present for the first time a practical plan to cost optimize the composite metal floor deck, so that the designer, by having the dimensions of the main beam framing, will be able to come to the most design including: the section of composite steel beam, the beam span, the thickness of metal deck sheets and the thickness of the concrete slab. The main method of op...

spending costs in construction of road pavements has turned this subject into one of the significant points in transportation infrastructure of countries. concrete slabs consider as a paving method with ability of reducing the rehabilitation needs. therefore, to manage costs and optimize the thickness of concrete pavements, recognizing the amount of determinative factors’ influence will be requ...

We present a detailed analytical study of surface plasmon polaritons SPPs in generalized asymmetric slab waveguides with a core of negative permittivity and permeability. Profiting from the duality principle, we confine ourselves to the analysis of p-polarized TM SPP eigenmodes, which also occur in thin metallic films. It is shown that the left-handed LH structures considered here support a ric...
