Mitochondria-targeted peptides incorporating dual fluorescent and selective iron chelators have been designed as novel biosensors for the mitochondrial labile iron pool. The probes were demonstrated to specifically co-localize with mitochondria and their fluorescence emission was found to be sensitive to the presence of iron.

Copper(II) complexes of amino acids and peptides containing the chelating bis(imidazolyl) residues have been reviewed. The results reveal that bis(imidazolyl) analogues of these biomolecules are very effective ligands for metal binding. The nitrogen donor atoms of the chelating agent are the major metal binding sites under acidic conditions. In the presence of terminal amino group the multident...

Lanthanide-induced shfits of (13)C nuclear magnetic resonances are reported for several amines and n-butyl isocyanide. Contact contributions to such shifts, especially of beta carbons, are clearly important for the chelates of Eu(+3) and Pr(+3). The importance of contact terms is shown to change in a rather predictable manner with the structure of the amine.

In the centrosymmetric dimeric title compound, [Pr(2)(C(5)H(9)O(2))(2)(C(11)H(19)O(2))(4)(CH(3)OH)(2)], the two praseodymium(III) atoms are eight-coordinate and are bridged by O atoms from the two pivalate anions. Each Pr(III) ion is further coordinated by two chelating 2,2,6,6-tetra-methyl-3,5-hepta-nedionate (thd(-)) ligands and one methanol mol-ecule. The distance between the two Pr(III) ion...

The monodeprotonated Schiff base ligand in the title compound, [Sn(CH(3))(C(14)H(19)N(4)S)Cl(2)], N,N',S-chelates to the Sn atom, which is six-coordinated in an octa-hedral environment. The three coordinating atoms along with the methyl C atom comprise a square plane, above and below which are positioned the Cl atoms. The amino group is a hydrogen-bond donor to a Cl atom of an adjacent mol-ecul...

Pulsed-light time-resolved fluorometry of lanthanide chelates has proved to be very sensitive for use with nonisotopic immunoassays. We describe a manually operated fluorometer with a conventional xenon flashtube. Sensitivity for 1-s determinations is similar to that of radioisotopic methods.

The monodeprotonated Schiff base ligand in the title com-pound, [Sn(C(4)H(9))(C(19)H(21)N(4)S)Cl(2)]·CHCl(3), N,N',S-chelates to the Sn atom, which is six-coordinated in an octa-hedral environment. The three coordinating atoms along with the butyl C atom comprise a square plane, above and below which are positioned the Cl atoms. The amino group is a hydrogen-bond donor to a Cl atom of an adjace...

Apo-lactoferrin and apo-transferrin protect against iron-ion-dependent hydroxyl-radical (.OH) generation from H2O2 in the presence of superoxide radicals or ascorbic acid at pH 7.4, whether the necessary iron is added as ionic iron or as ferritin. Iron-loaded transferrin and lactoferrin [2 mol of Fe(III)/mol] show no protective ability, but do not themselves accelerate .OH production unless che...

Thalassemia is a chronic hereditary disease in which patients with severe disease present with anemia during their first year of life. In Thailand, stem cell transplantation is not an option for most patients. Supportive treatments, such as blood transfusions and iron chelation are used. Little data exists regarding the Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of these patients. We conducted a st...

BACKGROUND Iron deprivation may be a therapeutic strategy for cancer. It can be achieved by using iron chelators. In this investigation, anti-neuroblastoma activities of a novel ferric chelator 2LL together with DFO, EDTA and DTPA were evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS SH-Sy5y cells were cultured at 37 degrees C in 5% CO2/95% air in DMEM containing 10% fetal bovine serum. The cells were seeded...
