We consider a mathematical model which describes the contact between a deformable body and an obstacle, the so-called foundation. The body is assumed to have a viscoelastic behavior that we model with the KelvinVoigt constitutive law. The contact is frictionless and is modeled with the well-known Signorini condition in a form with a zero gap function. We present two alternative yet equivalent w...

Abstract Continuum models are derived for the moving contact line problem through a combination of macroscopic and microscopic considerations. Macroscopic thermodynamic argument is used to place constraints on the form of the boundary conditions at the solid surface and the contact line. This information is then used to set up molecular dynamics to measure the detailed functional dependence of ...

We consider a variational inequality for the Lamé system which models an elastic body in contact with a rigid foundation. We give conditions on the domain and the contact set which allow us to prove regularity of solutions to the variational inequality. In particular, we show that the gradient of the solution is a square integrable function on the boundary.

In this paper a three dimensional thermal model of a sliding contact system is proposed for both steady-state or transient conditions. The influence of contact force, electric current and ambient temperature on the temperature distribution, has been investigated. A thermal analysis of the different type of the graphite material of fixed electric contact and its influence on contact system tempe...

In this paper, a generalized self-consistent scheme, or “three phase model”, is used to set up a micro-mechanics model for rough surface contact with randomly distributed asperities. The dimensionless average real pressure p is obtained as function of the ratio of the real contact area to the apparent contact area, 0 / A Ar . Both elastic and plastic materials are considered, and the influence ...

This paper addresses the problem of contact detection in discrete element multibody dynamic simulations. This paper presents an overview of the problem and a detail description of a new object representation scheme called the discrete function representation (DFR). This representation is designed to reduce the computational cost of both contact detection and the more diicult problem of contact ...

This paper describes the contact formation modeling for the identification of geometrical parameters (positions, orientations and dimensions) of rigid polyhedral objects in contact during the force-controlled execution of contact formation sequences. Following improvements with respect to the state of the art are made: (i) the modeling effort is reduced considerably, (ii) the generation of the ...

Recent advances in manufacturing technology and industrial automation require efficient and quality oriented machining practices. Performance, cost effectiveness and reliability of the work piece depends on the quality of surface roughness and can be measured with contact (conventional) and non contact (advanced) methods. Various measurement techniques starting from stylus to machine vision are...
