Isozyme characters, exclusive of allozymes (alleles), are potentially useful in phylogenetic investigations. Such data have been derived from the multilocus L-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme system. Among non-avian reptiles, the classes of potential characters include (1) and number of loci encoding LDH, (2) heterotramer patterns, (3) tissue-specific patterns of gene expression, (4) tissue-s...
we describe, the first case of phenobarbital-induced dress syndrome presenting as a lichenoïd eruption. a 49-year-old man had received phenobarbital for a cerebral metastasis. twenty-five days later, he developed a purplish skin eruption, odynophagia, oral mucosal erosion and fever. physical examination revealed a cervical lymphadenopathy and facial edema associated to a diffuse violaceous macu...
1,2-Propanediol (1,2-PD) is a major commodity chemical currently derived from propylene. Previously, we have demonstrated the production of enantiomerically pure (R)-1,2-propanediol from glucose by an engineered E. coli expressing genes for NADH-linked glycerol dehydrogenase and methylglyoxal synthase. In this work, we investigate three methods to improve 1,2-PD in E. coli. First, we investigat...
Lactic acid, an attractive, renewable chemical for production of biobased plastics (polylactic acid, PLA), is currently commercially produced from food-based sources of sugar. Pure optical isomers of lactate needed for PLA are typically produced by microbial fermentation of sugars at temperatures below 40 °C. Bacillus coagulans produces L(+)-lactate as a primary fermentation product and grows o...
Optimum reaction conditions at 30#{176} ± 0.5#{176} for two continuous spectrophotometric assay procedures, lactate to pyruvate (LP) and pyruvate to lactate (PL), were determined with respect to pH at 30#{176} (pH30) substrate concentration, and coenzyme concentration for the human LDH isoenxymes. For the P L procedure, broad pH30 optima were within the range of 7.20-7.40 for all the LDH isoenz...
The specific effects of L-lactate and urate on oxygen binding by the haemocyanin of the lobster Homarus vulgaris were investigated. Increasing concentrations of L-lactate were found to increase haemocyanin oxygen-affinity. The relationship between the oxygen affinity (logP50) and [L-lactate] expressed as (Alog/5())(Alog[L-lactate])"' was -0.11 at L-lactate concentrations between 0.3 and 1 Immoi...
The antimicrobial effect of L-lactate was much greater than that of D-lactate over a range of concentrations for Escherichia coli O157 and non-O157 strains. Despite this, the intracellular pHs and membrane potentials of L-lactate- and D-lactate-treated cells were similar, suggesting that these factors are not involved in the antimicrobial action of L-lactate.
