Background: Recent concerns have been raised regarding heavy metal content in wine and its potential health implications. The goal of this study was to determine if lead (Pb) intake poses a health risk among adult consumers of wine. This was achieved by performing a literature review of studies reporting Pb concentration in United States and international wines, determining adult wine consumpti...

Differential measurements of charged particle azimuthal anisotropy are presented for lead-lead collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, based on an integrated luminosity of approximately 8 μb−1. This anisotropy is characterized via a Fourier expansion of the distribution of charged particles in azimuthal angle relative to the reaction plane, with the coefficients vn de...

The symposium papers edited by Simpson will be a valued source for students of Black. The eight papers offer a number of insights on various aspects of Black's career. Robert Anderson provides a handy outline biography; Christopher Lawrence analyses Black's personal and intellectual links with Hume and Adam Smith, as well as contemporary natural philosophers; Henry Guerlac presents a stimulatin...

There is considerable clinical evidence that excessive lead absorption causes renal failure with hypertension and predisposes individuals to hypertension even in the absence of detectable renal failure. Recent analyses of transiliac bone biopsies indicate that unsuspected elevated bone leads may reflect the cause (or contributing cause) of end-stage renal disease in 5% of the European dialysis ...

Contamination of soil with lead has occurred on a global scale. Exposure to lead may cause adverse effects to human health and the environment. It is therefore desirable to obtain a quantitative estimate of the potential risk of lead contamination. Numerous studies have been conducted collecting lead concentration data from both natural and contaminated soil on a range of scales. Very few of th...

Charm photoproduction rates off nuclei below the nucleon threshold are estimated using the phenomenologically known structure functions both for x < 1 and x > 1. The rates rapidly fall below the threshold from values ∼10 pb for Pb close to the threshold (at 7.5 GeV) to ∼1pb at 6 GeV.
