The control of Johne's disease requires the identification of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP)-positive herds. Boot swabs and liquid manure samples have been suggested as an easy-to-use alternative to sampling individual animals in order to diagnose subclinical Johne's disease at the herd level, but there is a need to evaluate performance of this approach in the field. Using a lo...

introduction: umbilical cord blood is a rich source of hematopoietic cells and can be used in the clinical setting for hematopoietic cell transplantation in graft versus host disease (gvhd). a number of different drugs have been used as prophylaxis against gvhd including corticosteroids, cyclosporine a (cy a) and fk506. in this study, the in vitro effects of fk506 on cord blood mononuclear cell...

The microbial secondary metabolome encompasses great synthetic diversity, empowering microbes to tune their chemical responses to changing microenvironments. Traditional metabolomics methods are ill-equipped to probe a wide variety of environments or environmental dynamics. Here we introduce a class of microscale culture platforms to analyse chemical diversity of fungal and bacterial secondary ...

Three different cultures of BCG propagated for over 2 years in a liquid medium containing Tween 80 and albumin were found to differ in several of their intrinsic properties. Cultures of the three strains were found to consist of morphologically heterogeneous populations-each culture being made up of three main colonial types-spreading, intermediate, and non-spreading. The percentage distributio...

BACKGROUND Culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis currently represents the closest "gold standard" for diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), but operational data are scant on the impact and cost-effectiveness of TB culture for human immunodeficiency (HIV-) infected individuals in resource-limited settings. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We recorded costs, laboratory results, and dates of initiating ...

Tissue culture is the in vitro aseptic culture of cells, tissues, organs or whole plant under controlled nutritional and environmental conditions [1] often to produce the clones of plants. The resultant clones are true-to type of the selected genotype. The controlled conditions provide the culture an environment conducive for their growth and multiplication. These conditions include proper supp...

The culture filtrate of Lentinula edodes shows potent antimicrobial activity against the plant pathogenic bacteria Ralstonia solanacearum. Bioassay-guided fractionation was conducted using Diaion HP-20 column chromatography, and the insoluble active compound was not adsorbed on the resin. Further fractionation by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) suggested that the active compounds ...

The nonsporing anaerobes are commonly implicated as significant pathogens in human infections especially brain abscesses. Conventional laboratory diagnosis of anaerobes is time-consuming. Rapid detection of anaerobes from the clinical specimens is the need of the hour. Direct Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC) has been reported to be useful in rapid detection of anaerobes from the clinical specime...

We evaluated the use of the molecular bacterial load (MBL) assay, for measuring viable Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum, in comparison with solid agar and liquid culture. The MBL assay provides early information on the rate of decline in bacterial load and has technical advantages over culture in either form.

Coccidioides immitis appears to be unable to digest particulate collagen when cultured on collagen-containing semisolid culture media. However, all C. immitis strains solubilized collagen when the fungus was grown in liquid suspension cultures. Moreover, sterile culture filtrates were collagenolytic in collagen-buffer-agar plate assays.
