Long running transactions, such as online purchases, severely reduce throughput under standard locking protocols such as two-phase locking. We investigated the use of escrow transactions to remove the need to wait for locks, and thus reduced the average transaction runtime. Escrow transactions allow transactions to borrow a quantity from the record until the transaction aborts or commits and to...

BACKGROUND Formation of an intraluminal microbial biofilm is noted to play a significant role in the development of catheter-related infections (CRIs). Recently, it has been demonstrated that trisodium citrate (TSC) has superior antimicrobial effects over heparin for catheter locking. In this randomized controlled trial, we compared the influence of catheter locking with heparin and TSC on the ...

An alternative method for locking a second-harmonic generation (SHG) cavity on resonance is described and implemented. The usual method, Pound-Drever-Hall locking, is prone to long-term power fluctuations from power variations in the incident laser. When using the second harmonic field for squeezing, these power fluctuations need to be stabilized with an additional control loop (usually a Mach-...

Sudden and intermittent locking of the elbow joint is a com- mon complaint among patients who commonly demonstrate degenerative changes in the elbow. Common causes of elbow locking include acute trauma, osteochondritis dessicans, synovial chondromatosis, and osteoarthritis. Two cases involving patients with symptoms of elbow locking secondary to reasons other than loose bodies within the joint ...

In this paper we give a homotopy theoretic proof of a well-known result in database engineering: that 2-phase locking is safe. The proof gives an immediate intuitive reason for why the 2-phase locking condition implies safety. We point out a number of interesting open questions regarding the interplay between homotopy and concurrency.

Site-specific locking plates have gained popularity for the treatment of fractures. However, the clinical use of a site-specific locking plate for acetabular fractures remains untested due to production limits. To design a universal site-specific locking plate for acetabular fractures, the 3-dimensional (3D) photographic records of 171 pelvises were retrospectively studied to generate a univers...

A comprehensive timing jitter comparison is made for mode-locked semiconductor lasers using active, passive, and hybrid mode-locking techniques in both external and monolithic cavity configurations. Active mode locking gives the lowest residual rms timing jitter of 65 fs ( 150 Hz-50 MHz), followed by the hybrid and passive mode-locking techniques. It is found that monolithic cavity devices with...

A variant of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is used to investigate the frequency-locking phenomena in spatially extended systems. With appropriate parameter values, a variety of frequency-locked patterns including flats, pi fronts, labyrinths, and 2pi/3 fronts emerge. We show that in spatially extended systems, frequency locking can be enhanced or suppressed by diffusive coupling. Novel p...
