Approximate surface fields due to a plane-wave solution and a local-mode solution are compared. The plane-wave solution, which is new, is shown to agree well with experiment. The local-mode solution, which often has been applied to tapered waveguides and antennas, fails near the cutoffs of the surface waves.

AB S TRACT A global analysis of the surface trapping of low-frequency non-radial g modes in rotating early-type stars is undertaken within the Cowling, adiabatic and traditional approximations. The dimensionless pulsation equations governing these modes are reviewed, and the boundary conditions necessary for solution of the equations are considered; in particular, an outer mechanical boundary c...
Consider a uniform train of surface waves with a two-dimensional, bi-periodic surface pattern, propagating on deep water. One approximate model of the evolution of these waves is a pair of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which neglects any dissipation of the waves. We show that in this model, such a wave train is linearly unstable to small perturbations in the initial data, because of ...
Intercellular Ca(2+) waves are believed to propagate through networks of glial cells in culture in one of two ways: by diffusion of IP(3) between cells through gap junctions or by release of ATP, which functions as an extracellular messenger. Experiments were conducted to determine the mechanism of Ca(2+) wave propagation between glial cells in an intact CNS tissue. Calcium waves were imaged in...
This thesis presents two families of novel waveguide-integrated components based on millimeter-wave microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for reconfigurable systems. The first group comprises V-band (50–75 GHz) and W-band (75–110 GHz) waveguide switches and switchable irises, and their application as switchable cavity resonators, and tunable bandpass filters implemented by integration of novel ...
This paper examines the generation and propagation of a Third order solitary water wave along the channel. First the Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH) numerical method is described and the boundary condition handling method is presented. The numerical model is then used to simulate solitary wave propagation along the fixed depth channel. The numerical results are compared wi...
The amplitude of sound scattered from submerged elastic objects is dominated by resonance phenomena corresponding to the mechanical eigenvibrations of the object. It is often difficult to predict the resonance frequencies of bounded elastic targets using exact methods. It has been shown, however, that resonances arise due to phase matching of circumferential waves traveling over the object surf...
