Meiotic recombination between a circular and a linear chromosome in Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been investigated. The circle was a haploid-viable derivative of chromosome III constructed by joining regions near the two chromosome ends via a recombinant DNA construction: (HMR/MAT-URA3-pBR322-MAT/HML) and was also deleted for MAL2 (which therefore uniquely marks a linear chromosome III). Recomb...
To determine which segments of a chromosome arm are responsible for the initiation of chiasmate pairing in meiosis, a series of novel isochromosomes was developed in hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). These isochromosomes are deficient for different terminal segments in the two arms. It is proposed to call them "asymmetrical." Meiotic metaphase I pairing of these asymmetrical isochromosome...
Chimpanzees and humans are genetically very similar, with the striking exception of their Y chromosomes, which have diverged tremendously. The male-specific region (MSY), representing the greater part of the Y chromosome, is inherited from father to son in a clonal fashion, with natural selection acting on the MSY as a unit. Positive selection might involve the performance of the MSY in spermat...
Acledra comprises 15 taxonomically identified species, most of which are crop pests. This is the first cytogenetic study of species of this genus. Acledra kinbergii and A. modesta showed the modal number of the Pentatomidae (2n = 14 = 12 + XY), while A. bonariensis had a reduced complement (2n = 12 = 10 + XY), with a markedly larger autosomal pair. Meiotic behavior follows the general pattern o...
Present investigation reports the mutagenic efficacy of sodium azide with a view to study its effects on meiotic behavior and phenotypic quantitative traits of Brassica campestris L. Seeds were treated with three concentration of sodium azide i.e. 0.3%, 0.5% and 0.7%, along with control. Morphological/phenotypic parameters studied were plant height, number of primary branches, number of seconda...
Meiosis involves a dramatic reorganization of the genetic material, along with changes in the architecture of the nucleoplasm and cytoplasm. In the opisthokonts, nuclear envelope and meiotic chromosome behavior are coordinated by forces generated in the cytoplasm and transferred to the nucleus by the nuclear-envelope protein linkers SUN and KASH. During meiotic prophase I, the telomere bouquet ...
We report that lack of crossover along one chromosome arm is associated with high-frequency occurrence of recombination close to the opposing arm's centromere during zebrafish meiotic recombination. Our data indicate that recombination behavior on the two arms of a chromosome is linked. These results inform mapping strategies for telomeric mutants.
