We found that two lithium niobate-type oxides, CdPbO3 and PbNiO3 were synthesized by high-pressure as metastable low-pressure perovskite-type phases. We then discussed the stability of lithium niobate-type and perovskite-type oxides relative to oxides with other structure for ABO3 compounds. Consequently, the tolerance factor of perovskite is not the only predominant one to determine the stabil...

Non-layer structured nanomaterials with single- or few-layer thickness have two-dimensional sheet-like structures and possess intriguing properties. Recent years have seen major advances in development of a host of non-layer structured ultrathin two-dimensional nanomaterials such as noble metals, metal oxides and metal chalcogenides. The wet-chemical synthesis has emerged as the most promising ...

We demonstrate the selective functionalization of 3-D polymer microstructures that were created using multiphoton absorption polymerization. By fabricating different portions of the structures with acrylic and methacrylic polymers, we are able to take advantage of the differential reactivities of these materials to perform functionalization chemistry on a single polymeric component. We demonstr...

The properties of biodiesel as renewable fuel, as well as the problems associated with its conventional production processes are outlined. A novel sustainable process based on catalytic reactive distillation is proposed as alternative. The pros and cons of manufacturing biodiesel via fatty acid esterification using metal oxides as solid acid catalysts are investigated. The experimental findings...

A novel three-dimensional (3D) metal/metal oxide core/branch array electrode has been fabricated as a supercapacitor electrode. Hollow Ni nanocorn arrays are constructed on Ni foams and act as a highly conductive and stable support to Co3O4 nanoflakes. Enhanced pseudocapacitive performance compared to bare Co3O4 nanosheets is demonstrated with high rate capability and excellent cycling stability.

ÐSurface coatings (bio®lms and associated minerals) were collected on glass slides in the oxic surface waters of Cayuga Lake (New York State, U.S.A.) and were used to evaluate the relative contributions of Fe, Mn and Al oxides and organic material to total observed Pb and Cd adsorption by the surface coating materials. Several alternative selective extraction techniques were evaluated with resp...

In this paper we report on the study of electrical switching in thin film MOM structures on the basis of transition metal oxides under AC conditions. The materials studied are Nb2O5, TiO2, and WO3, obtained by electrochemical oxidation of the metal, as well as MoO3, obtained by thermal deposition in vacuum. Transformations of dynamic switching characteristics with changes in temperature and fre...

In strongly correlated electron systems, enhanced fluctuations in the proximity of the ordered states of electronic degrees of freedom often induce anomalous electronic properties such as unconventional superconductivity. While spin fluctuations in the energy-momentum space have been studied widely using inelastic neutron scattering, other degrees of freedom, i.e., charge and orbital, have hard...

The intimate relationship between stoichiometry and physicochemical properties in transition-metal oxides makes them appealing as tunable materials. These features become exacerbated when dealing with nanostructures. However, due to the complexity of nanoscale materials, establishing a distinct relationship between structure-morphology and functionalities is often complicated. In this regard, i...

In transition metal oxides, preferential occupation of specific d orbitals on the transition metal ion can lead to the development of a long-range ordered pattern of occupied orbitals. This phenomenon, referred to as orbital ordering, is usually observed indirectly from the cooperative Jahn-Teller distortions (CJTDs) that result as a consequence of the orbital ordering. This paper examines the ...
