Comparative analyses of primate brain evolution have highlighted changes in size and internal organization as key factors underlying species diversity. It remains, however, unclear (i) how much variation in mosaic brain reorganization versus variation in relative brain size contributes to explaining the structural neural diversity observed across species, (ii) which mosaic changes contribute mo...

The in vitro assembly of tobacco mosaic virus from its constituent RNA and protein was followed by methods of electron microscopy. The effect of the state of polymerization of the protein upon the initiation of assembly of tobacco mosaic virus rods, and the subsequent rod elongation, was investigated. Protein in two identifiable states of polymerization was used: the 20S "disc", consisting of 3...

Using a classical master equation that describes energy transfer over a given lattice, we explore how energy transfer efficiency along with the photon capturing ability depends on network connectivity, on transfer rates, and on volume fractions-the numbers and relative ratio of fluorescence chromophore components, e.g., donor (D), acceptor (A), and bridge (B) chromophores. For a one-dimensional...

Coarse-grained features of macromolecular assemblies are understood via a set of order parameters (OPs) constructed in terms of their all-atom configuration. OPs are shown to be slowly changing in time and capture the large-scale spatial features of macromolecular assemblies. The relationship of these variables to the classic notion of OPs based on symmetry breaking phase transitions is discuss...

The nucleotide (nt) sequences of the coat protein (CP) genes of two Japanese zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) isolates (ZYMV-169 and ZYMV-M) were determined. The CP genes of both isolates were 837 nt long and encoded 279 amino acids (aa). The nt and deduced aa sequence similarities between the two isolates were 92% and 94.6%, respectively. The deduced aa sequences of CPs of the Japanese isol...

Samsun NN tobacco cells were transformed with chimeric genes for pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins derived from genomic (PR-1a, GRP) or cDNA (PR-S) clones under the transcriptional control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter. Regenerated plants were assayed by RNA and protein gel blotting, and plants showing high specific expression of the inserted genes were selected for self-pollina...

We compared some fitness components of the wild squash species Cucurbita pepo spp. ovifera var. texana (C. texana) and three generations of hybrids (F1, BC1, and BC2) between C. texana and commercial transgenic squash CZW-3 over three consecutive years under field conditions of low (LDP) and high disease pressure (HDP) by Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) and Wate...

The study of dispersion of alfalfa mosaic virus (ALMV) infection based on DAS-ELISA indicated that the fields of Alfalfa, potatoes and tomatoes from Chenaran, Ghochan, Shirvan, Mashhad, Neishaboor and Torbat Heydarieh were infected with the virus. The Statistical analysis indicated that the amount of infection did not differ in the surveyed regions and total mean of infection was 53 percent. Th...

Our research groups have previously published a study estimating the bottleneck size of Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) during host plant colonization [1]. Two methods were used in that study, both based on the temporal evolution of neutral marker frequencies; one uses estimates of FST, and the other tracks changes in marker frequency variance over time. Here we report that (i) the variance-bas...

In four distinct alstroemeria-infecting cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) isolates, additional sequences of various lengths were present in the 3' nontranslated regions of their RNAs 2 and 3, apparently the result of intra- and intermolecular recombination events. Competition experiments revealed that these recombined RNA 2 and 3 segments increased the biological fitness of CMV in alstroemeria.
