Luttinger liquid theory predicts that collective electron excitations due to strong electron-electron interactions in a one-dimensional (1D) system will result in a modification of the collective charge-propagation velocity. By utilizing a circuit model for an individual metallic single-walled carbon nanotube as a nanotransmission line, it has been shown that the frequency-dependent terahertz i...

The field of nanotechnology is rapidly maturing into a fertile and interdisciplinary research area from which new sensor and actuator technologies can be conceived. The tools and processes derived from the nanotechnology field have offered engineers the opportunity to design materials in which sensing transduction mechanisms can be intentionally encoded. For example, singleand multi-walled carb...

The effects of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) concentration on the structural, optical and electrical properties of conjugated polymer-carbon nanotube composite are discussed. Multi-walled carbon nanotube-polypyrrole nanocomposites were synthesized by electrochemical polymerization of monomers in the presence of different amounts of MWNTs using sodium dodecylbenzensulfonate (SDBS) as surfa...

A new hybrid material consisting of a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and carbon nanotube (CNT) was synthesized by a simple and versatile approach entailing click coupling between azide moiety-functionalized POSS and alkyne-functionalized multi-walled CNTs. This approach provides a simple and convenient route to efficiently functionalize a wide variety of nanoscale nanostructure mat...

Controlled orientation of a small laccase on a multi-walled carbon nanotube electrode was achieved via copper-free click chemistry mediated immobilization. Modification of the enzyme was limited to only the tethering site and involved the genetic incorporation of the unnatural amino acid 4-azido-L-phenylalanine (AzF). This approach enabled efficient direct electron transfer.

Individual multi-walled carbon nanotubes were investigated for their usefulness as nanoscale electrochemical electrodes. The nanotubes were mounted on metal-coated atomic force microscopy tips, and the assembly was insulated with Parylene polymer. Approximately 200nm of the nanotube tip was exposed by use of a laser so the entire probe could be immersed in an electrolytic solution with only the...

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes have been grown on 7 nm Ni-coated substrates consisting of 300 lm thick highly n-doped (1 0 0) silicon covered with a di usion barrier layer (10 nm thick) of SiO2 or TiN, by combining hot-wire chemical vapor deposition and direct current plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition at low temperature (around 620 °C). Acetylene gas was used as carbon source and ammonia...

An important issue in nanopore sensing is to construct stable and versatile sensors that can discriminate analytes with minute differences. Here we report a means of creating nanopores that comprise ultrashort single-walled carbon nanotubes inserted into a lipid bilayer. We investigate the ion transport and DNA translocation through single-walled carbon nanotube nanopores and find that our resu...
