We describe a patient with tuberous sclerosis and an insulinoma. The neurologic abnormalities typically present in patients with tuberous sclerosis may, in rare cases, be manifestations of hypoglycemia. We discussed a possible association between tuberous sclerosis and multiple endocrine neoplasia type I.

BACKGROUND Africa faces a number of unique environmental challenges. Unfortunately, it lacks the infrastructure needed to support the comprehensive environmental studies that could provide the scientific basis to inform environmental policies. There are a number of known sources of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and other hazardous chemicals in Africa. However, a coordinated approach to ...

BACKGROUND The endocrine disruptor field has been vexed by difficulties in reproducing various claims of effects at unusually low doses. In previous analyses, variations in control responses from experiment to experiment and problems with observing effects in positive controls have been identified as possible explanations of the resulting impasse. OBJECTIVE In this article, we argue that both...

Pancreatic endocrine tumors (PETs) are uncommon tumors with an annual incidence <1 per 100 000 person-years in the general population. The PETs that produce hormones resulting in symptoms are designated as functional. The majority of PETs are non-functional. Of the functional tumors, insulinomas are the most common, followed by gastrinomas. The clinical course of patients with PETs is variable ...

BACKGROUND Multiple sclerosis (MS) was first reported in Cuba in 1965. The most frequent appearance is observed in the first six months of the year. OBJECTIVE To determine the seasonal distribution and evolving forms of MS patients diagnosed with the disease between April 2004 and November 2007. METHOD Twenty-one patients with suspected MS and 42 outbreaks were studied. Patients were classi...

BACKGROUND The prevention of medullary thyroid cancer in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 syndrome has demonstrated the ability of molecular diagnosis and prophylactic surgery to improve patient outcomes. However, the other major neoplasia associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, phaeochromocytoma, is not as well characterised in terms of occurrence and treatment ou...

We report a case of synchronous bilateral pituitary adenomas in a patient with multiple endocrine neoplasia type one (MEN1). The patient was previously known to have a pancreatic gastrinoma and had first-degree relatives with MEN1. Both adenomas were concurrently revealed by high-resolution MR imaging of the pituitary gland as part of the investigation of the patient's severe, persistent headac...

Endocrine diseases may result in changes in cutaneous function and morphology, which cause various skin manifestations, including nonspecific or pathognomonic signs. Some of these manifestations are already known dermatologic diseases with only increased frequency in this patient group. As a result the skin may the play role of a screen displaying endocrine disorders, either due to hormone exce...

There is increasing interest in interfacing dissociated neuronal cultures with planar multielectrode arrays (MEAs) for the study of the dynamics of neuronal networks. Here we report on the successful use of three-dimensional tip electrode arrays (3D MEAs), originally developed for use with brain slices, for recording and stimulation of cultured neurons. We observed that many neurons grew direct...
