We reported a case of septicemia by Vibrio cholerae O1, in São Paulo, Brazil. A 70-year-old male patient, living in an urban area, entered the emergency service having sepsis, dying 12 hours later. Blood culture was positive for Vibrio cholerae O1. This is the first case of bacteremia by Vibrio cholerae O1 reported in South America.

A total of 26 strains of Vibrio cholerae, including members of the O1, O139, and non-O1, non-O139 serogroups from both clinical and environmental sources, were examined for the presence of genes encoding cholera toxin (ctxA), zonula occludens toxin (zot), accessory cholera enterotoxin (ace), hemolysin (hlyA), NAG-specific heat-stable toxin (st), toxin-coregulated pilus (tcpA), and outer membran...

abstract achieving economic growth, as one of the essential purposes in each country, needs appropriate tracing of government as one of the important and effective sections in that economy. nowadays, unlike the 80s, economists concentrate on objectives such as explanation of the relationship between size of the government and economic growth and delineation of optimum size of the government whi...

Construction and demolition waste represents a growing environmental, social, economic problem, has become priority for European worldwide policies. The early quantification of construction is essential the minimisation its production improvement management. This requires development design-based tools that enable better understanding expected produced during phase. Building Information Modelli...

We present a pipeline to perform integrative analysis of mate-pair (MP) and paired-end (PE) genomic DNA sequencing data. Our pipeline detects structural variations (SVs) by taking aligned sequencing read pairs as input and classifying these reads into properly paired and discordantly paired categories based on their orientation and inferred insert sizes. Recurrent SV was identified from the dis...

In the social and other sciences many data are collected with a known but complex underlying structure. Over the past two decades there has been an increase in the use of multilevel modelling techniques that account for nested data structures. Often however the underlying data structures are more complex and cannot be fitted into a nested structure. First, there are cross-classified models wher...

UNLABELLED Cholera continues to be a global threat, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. In 2011, a cholera outbreak occurred in Palawan, Philippines, affecting more than 500 people, and 20 individuals died. Vibrio cholerae O1 was confirmed as the etiological agent. Source attribution is critical in cholera outbreaks for proper management of the disease, as well as to control spread. In ...

The usual method for sleep stages classification is visual inspection method by sleep specialist. It uses eight EEG channels (O1, O2, T3, T4, C3, C4, Fp1 and Fp2), EOG and also EMG for sleep analysis. This method consumes more time (hours) for sleep stages classification. Some brain disorders like narcolepsy (excessive day time sleepiness) requires real-time monitoring of sleep states which is ...

Representational difference analysis (RDA) is a recently developed technique used for amplifying genetic differences between two closely related genomes. We compared RDA and a modified version of RDA to examine genomic differences between the two Vibrio cholerae serogroups that cause epidemic cholera, O1 and O139, and between the two biotypes of the O1 serogroup. With both techniques, we recove...

We have identified a 56-kb pathogenicity island (PAI) in avian pathogenic Escherichia coli strain O1:K1 (APEC-O1). This PAI, termed PAI I(APEC-O1), is integrated adjacent to the 3' end of the pheV tRNA gene. It carries putative virulence genes of APEC (pap operon), other E. coli genes (tia and ireA), and a 1.5-kb region unique to APEC-O1. The kps gene cluster required for the biosynthesis of po...
