BACKGROUND Most environmental non-tuberculous mycobacteria have been demonstrated to invade amoebal trophozoites and cysts, but such relationships are largely unknown for members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. An environmental source has been proposed for the animal Mycobacterium bovis and the human Mycobacterium canettii. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Using optic and electron mi...

Mycobacterium was verified in animals from a Brazilian dairy herd, a total of 42 samples from 30 cows were submitted to culture and the isolated strains were analyzed by two polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the first specific for species belonging to the Mycobacterium complex (MTBC) and the other for differentiating M. tuberculosis from M. bovis. Twenty seven samples (64.3%) from 18 animals (60...

Background Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a disease which constitutes an important economic and zoonotic problem in Latin America. The etiological agent, Mycobacterium bovis, has several antigens described and well characterized. The M. bovis antigen 85B (Ag85B), encoded by fbpB gene, is the bacillus immunodominant antigen and promising target for vaccine and diagnosis development [1]. Ag85B combi...

An insertion sequence, IS1081, in the genome of Mycobacterium bovis has been identified and sequenced. It is 1324 bp long with 15 bp inverted repeat ends and contains a large ORF. There are six copies of IS1081 in the genome of M. bovis and the element is also present in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. IS1081 is not closely related to other DNA elements described in actinomycetes but its putative t...

During 1969-84 Mycobacterium bovis was isolated from 20 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. This represented less than 1% of the total cases of respiratory tuberculosis confirmed bacteriologically at the Liverpool Public Health Laboratory during this period. All 20 patients were considered to have reactivated disease and all presented with the typical features of respiratory tuberculosis. Dur...

This work reports the draft genome sequences of the Mycobacterium bovis strains M1009 and M1010, isolated from the lymph nodes of two infected cows on a beef farm in Paraguay. Comparative genomics between these strains and other regional strains may provide more insights regarding M. bovis epidemiology in South America.

This is the first identified case of Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)-derived cutaneous tuberculosis that localizes at a place different from the vaccination site in hosts without immune deficiency. A healthy baby with a developing abscess is described. A multiplex PCR identified the abscess as originating from M. bovis BCG Tokyo 172.
