BACKGROUND Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an arterial ischemic stroke, rarely occurred in children accompanied with asymptomatic cerebral infarction and almost never involved in severe pneumonia related to Mycoplasma pneumonia infection. Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) is one of the most common forms of community-acquired pneumonia in children and adolescents. Outbreaks of MPP occur in 3- to 7-year cycles worldwide; recent epidemics in Korea occurred in 2006-2007, 2011, and 2015-2016. Although MPP is known to be a mild, self-limiting disease with a good response to macrolides, it can also progress into a severe and fulmin...
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with a highly purified pneumolysin as the antigen was evaluated for serological diagnosis of pneumococcal pneumonia. One hundred four healthy controls were tested, and the specificity of the test was set to 95%. In samples from patients with bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia, 82% (18 of 22) were positive, i.e., at least one serum sample had a titer a...
The chest radiographs of 60 adult patients with serologically proven mycoplasma pneumonia were reviewed. Confluent or patchy consolidation was most commonly seen, and involved one lobe only in 40% of patients. Widespread nodular opacities were seen much less frequently (7%). Pleural fluid was rare. Complete resolution was almost invariable, 40% of radiographs having cleared by four weeks and 96...
Methods: Five commercial farms with a history of mycoplasmal pneumonia participated in the study. Samples were taken from different age groups during a single visit, starting at 5, 6, 7, or 8 weeks of age and up to nearly marketing age. Ten animals per age group (five different age groups per farm) were randomly selected and nasal swabs and blood samples taken. DNA from nasal swabs was extracte...
The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro antimycoplasmal activity of hydroxytyrosol. Twenty strains of Mycoplasma hominis, three strains of Mycoplasma fermentans, and one strain of Mycoplasma pneumoniae were used. For M. pneumoniae, M. hominis, and M. fermentans, the MICs were 0.5, 0.03 (for 90% of the strains tested), and 0.25 microg/ml, respectively.
A 38 year old woman with diabetes mellitus and bronchial asthma was admitted to hospital with pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae; she recovered promptly on erythromycin treatment. Six weeks later she presented with aortic valve endocarditis without concurrent lung disease. A concurrent increase in titres of antibody to Legionella bozemanii, L longbeachae, and L jordanis indicated a Legio...
