This is a study on electrolytes that takes a thermodynamically consistent coupling between mechanics and diffusion into account. It removes some inherent deficiencies of the popular Nernst-Planck model. A boundary problem for equilibrium processes is used to illustrate the features of the new model.
In this note we study a fractional Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation modeling a semiconductor device. We prove several decay estimates for the Lebesgue and Sobolev norms in one, two and three dimensions. We also provide the first term of the asymptotic expansion as t → ∞.
The drift-diffusion (Poisson-Nernst-Planck) model is applied to ionic channels in biological membranes plus surrounding solution baths. Simulations of the K channel in KCl solutions using the TRBDF2 method are presented which show significant boundary layers at the ends of the channel. The computed current-voltage curve for the K channel shows excellent agreement with experimental measurements.

The effect of pH on the spectral and redox properties of model GFP synthetic chromophores (Cros) in a universal buffer system was investigated. The Cro hydroxy-derivatives demonstrated a Nernst-type electrochemical dependence of the anodic potential within the pH 2-8 range. Analogous studies on various fluorescent proteins were unsuccessful.
