We describe modeling of the ''beat'' and "bump" Cepheids, using the new radiative opacities. Discrepancies between these models and the evolutionary tracks for stars of appropriate mass are discussed. Finally, we point out some of the difficulties involving the long-period Cepheid sample with periods greater than 20 days.

Did regulatory reforms that lowered barriers to competition among U.S. banks increase or decrease the degree to which banks manage the information that they disclose to the public and regulators? We find that relaxing regulatory impediments to competition reduced discretionary loan loss provisioning and the frequency with which banks restate financial statements. The results suggest that compet...

Opacity shadow maps approximate light transmittance inside a complex volume with a set of planar opacity maps. A volume made of standard primitives (points, lines, and polygons) is sliced and rendered with graphics hardware to each opacity map that stores alpha values instead of traditionally used depth values. The alpha values are sampled in the maps enclosing each primitive point and interpol...

The opacity of a spiral disk due to dust absorption influences every measurement we make of it in the UV and optical. Two separate techniques directly measure the total absorption by dust in the disk: calibrated distant galaxy counts and overlapping galaxy pairs. The main results from both so far are a semi-transparent disk with more opaque arms, and a relation between surface brightness and di...

Context. The radiative energy transport can under certain assumptions be treated in the diffusion approximation. If so, the Rosseland mean opacity coefficient characterises the interaction between radiation and matter. The opacity data are usually available in pretabulated form, and in the generation of the data one assumes a distinct heavy element mixture which is usually a scaled solar one. I...

AIM To reveal differences in thin-section computed tomography (CT) findings between lung neoplastic lesions and non-neoplastic lesions, which showed a focal area of ground-glass opacity or ground-glass opacity predominance. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 82 focal areas of ground-glass opacity and ground-glass opacity predominance, consisting of 38 neoplastic and 44 non-neoplastic lesions, w...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of lung volume on dependent lung opacity seen at thin-section CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS In thirteen healthy volunteers, thin-section CT scans were performed at three levels (upper, mid, and lower portion of the lung) and at different lung volumes (10, 30, 50, and 100% vital capacity), using spirometric gated CT. Using a three-point scale, two radiologists d...

PURPOSE To examine the response of the lens to varying sizes of perforating injury. METHODS Four-week-old mice were used. Injuries consisted of pricking in the central region of the lens by transcorneal insertion of needles of two different sizes. After injury, the eyeballs were removed sequentially at various intervals up to 30 days and examined morphologically. RESULTS The mouse lens show...

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Emission Measurement Center in conjunction with EPA Regions VI and VIII, the state of Utah, and the U.S. Department of Defense have conducted a series of long-term pilot and field tests to determine the accuracy and reliability of a visible opacity monitoring system consisting of a conventional digital camera and a separate computer software applicatio...
