We report a novel MEMS fiber scanner with an electrothermal silicon microactuator and a directly mounted optical fiber. The microactuator comprises double hot arm and cold arm structures with a linking bridge and an optical fiber is aligned along a silicon fiber groove. The unique feature induces separation of resonant scanning frequencies of a single optical fiber in lateral and vertical direc...

The compact size, mechanical flexibility, and growing functionality of optical fiber and fiber optic devices are enabling several new modalities for imaging the mammalian nervous system in vivo. Fluorescence microendoscopy is a minimally invasive fiber modality that provides cellular resolution in deep brain areas. Diffuse optical tomography is a non-invasive modality that uses assemblies of fi...

Massive fiber-to-the-home network deployment requires never ending equipment upgrades operating at higher bandwidth. We show effective signal slicing method, which can reuse low bandwidth opto-electronical components for optical communications at higher bit rates. OCIS codes: (060.2330) Fiber optics communications; (060.2360) Fiber optics links and subsystems; (060.0060) Fiber optics and optica...

Three-dimensional ~3D! optical waveguides were fabricated in a photopolymerizing resin mixture solution by using a multimode optical fiber, without any moving parts. The core portion has formed by the selective photopolymerization of a higher refractive index monomer by Ar laser irradiation through the optical fiber. A continuous, straight waveguide was grown by the self-trapping of a guided la...

In the present paper, the recent applications of optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) in hybrid wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)/time division multiplexing (TDM) local area passive optical networks have been modeled and parametrically investigated over wide range of the affecting parameters. Moreover, we have analyzed the ability of the hybrid WDM/TDM Passive optical networks to handle a ...

We propose a coherent optical and radio seamless network concept that allows broadband access without deployment of additional optical fibers within an optical fiber dead zone while enhancing network resilience to disasters. Recently developed radio-over-fiber (RoF) and digital coherent detection technologies can seamlessly convert between optical and radio signals. A millimeter-wave radio with...

The common and traditional method for dispersion compensation in optical domain is concatenating the transmit optical fiber by a compensating optical fiber having high-negative dispersion coefficient. In this paper, we take an opposite direction and show how an optical fiber with high-positive dispersion coefficient can also be used for dispersion compensation. Our optical dispersion compensati...

The dispersion unshifted optical fiber is in favor of communications construction project, because of its mature manufacturing technique, low loss, large bandwidth, transmission distance, low engineering cost, the related derivative products, easy realization. In order to pursue a better communication quality, dispersion control has become an important index of engineering. In this paper, based...

We present theoretical and experimental results for compact slanted gratings for vertical coupling between single-mode fiber and InP–InGaAsP waveguides. The maximum calculated coupling efficiency is 59%. We have measured a coupling efficiency of 16% for a 10m-long slanted grating.
