A single-chip photocurrent-driven wavelength converter operating at 10 Gbit=s is presented. The device consists of a monolithically integrated widely tunable transmitter and an optical receiver. The transmitter consists of a sampled grating DBR laser, electroabsorption modulator and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The optical receiver includes a quantum-well pin photodetector and a set o...

We theoretically and experimentally evaluate a beat interference cancellation receiver (BICR) for direct detection optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DD-OFDM) systems that improves the spectral efficiency (SE) by reducing the guard band between the optical carrier and the optical OFDM signal while mitigating the impact of signal-signal mixing interference (SSMI). Experimental r...

We show an improved DPSK receiver design which can increase useful dispersion tolerance by up to a factor of two. The increased dispersion tolerance is achieved through optimization of the optical filter at the receiver and the delay of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In this paper we fully explain the concept, quantify the gain and provide an explanation for the operation of the receiver.

The fundamental performance limits of optical communications over the freespace channel are developed using quantum theory, and presented in terms of concepts familiar to communications engineers. The compact Dirac notation generally employed in quantum mechanics is defined, and key concepts necessary for understanding quantum projection measurements are reviewed. A derivation that provides sig...
