We have reported that a single injection of 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1 alpha,25(OH)2D3), the active form of vitamin D3, into vitamin D-deficient chicks produces a marked increase in the formation of duodenal putrescine by two pathways, one from ornithine and one from spermidine (Shinki, T., Takahashi, N., Kadofuku, T., Sato, T., and Suda, T. (1985) J. Biol. Chem. 260, 2185-2190). In this...

The presence of certain rpsL (strA) mutations in a strain of Escherichia coli that cannot synthesize putrescine or spermidine because of deletions in ornithine decarboxylase, arginine decarboxylase, and agmatine ureohydrolase, converts a partial requirement for polyamines for growth into an absolute requirement.

Both exposure to cold and administration of aminophylline result in rapid increases in cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP) in the adrenal medulla and adrenal cortex. These increases are followed by dramatic increases in ornithine decarboxylase activity is due to new enzyme systhesis. The data suggest that the decarboxylase activity is regulated by an increase in cyclic AMP.

A good correlation was observed between the reciprocal of the half-life of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity in the presence of cycloheximide and the relative amount of ODC-antizyme complex to total ODC (free ODC plus complexed ODC) activity in HTC cells examined at various times after cell dilution or change of medium. Pretreatment of cells with putrescine increased the relative amount of...

BACKGROUND The transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) is expressed in the cardiovascular system, and increased TRPV1 expression has been associated with cardiac hypertrophy. Nevertheless, the role of TRPV1 in the pathogenesis of cardiac hypertrophy and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS In cultured cardiomyocytes, activation of TRPV1 increas...

Polyamine biosynthesis in senescing leaves of Avena sativa L. was measured by determining the activities of arginine decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.19), ornithine decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.17) and S-adenosyl-l-methionine decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.50). Polyamine content was also estimated by thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Arginine decarboxylase activity decreases prog...

A multiplex PCR method, aimed at the detection of genes associated with biogenic amine production, identified the odc gene encoding ornithine decarboxylase in 1 of 15 strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis. The ability of the positive strain, S. epidermidis 2015B, to produce putrescine in vitro was demonstrated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In this strain, the odc gene was de...
