We evaluated the vitreous bodies from 14 clinically nonfungal infectious eyes to establish a baseline for the presence of a fungal genome using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The vitreous samples were all PCR negative, except for one eye with chronic uveitis. Blood samples examined were all PCR negative. We concluded that fungal DNA sequences could not be amplified in vitreous specimens obtai...

conclusions concurrent pulmonary nocardiosis and tuberculosis is frequent in hiv-infected patients. rapid and sensitive methods such as pcr are recommended for detection of such co-infections. results from 157 sputum specimens, positive samples by acid fast staining, culture and pcr for m. tuberculosis were reported for 7.6% (12/157), 10.1% (16/157) and 7% (11/157) of samples, respectively. no ...

Leptospirosis is an important emerging zoonotic infection in developing regions of the world. Laboratory testing for leptospiral infections is important both for diagnosis and management of the patients. The conventional laboratory methods for diagnosis have many shortcomings. The availability of molecular techniques like Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) as diagnostic tool has improved speed and...

We detected orthopoxvirus in 28 of 125 serum samples collected during 2009 from cattle in Uruguay. Two samples were PCR-positive for vaccinia virus and had sequences similar to those for vaccinia virus associated with outbreaks in Brazil. Autochthonous circulation of vaccinia virus in Uruguay and other South American countries cannot be ruled out.

Mycoplasmas hominis, Mycoplasmas genitalium and Ureaplasma urealyticum are associated with infections of the genitourinary tract, reproductive failure, and neonatal morbidity and mortality. A multiplex PCR was developed for simultaneously detection of these Mycoplasmas species in a single amplification reaction. The total number of 104 samples was collected from 104 women’s genital specimens wi...

We report a multilaboratory evaluation of hepatitis C virus (HCV) viral load assays to determine their linear range, reproducibility, subtype detection, and agreement. A panel of HCV RNA samples ranging in nominal concentration from 1.0 to 7.0 log10 IU/ml was constructed by diluting a clinical specimen (genotype 1b). Replicates of the panel were tested in multiple laboratories using the Abbott ...

The role of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) in disease beyond primary infection remains unclear. We have developed and validated a new reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) assay for HHV-6 that can determine the presence of HHV-6 in clinical specimens and differentiate between latent and replicating virus. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 109 children were evaluated for HHV-6 by RT-PCR, DNA PCR...
