BACKGROUND Pemphigus is a rare group of life-threatening mucocutaneous autoimmune blistering diseases. Frequently, oral lesions precede the cutaneous ones. This study aimed to describe clinical and histological features of oral pemphigus lesions in patients aged 18 years and above, attending outpatient's facility of Khartoum Teaching Hospital - Dermatology Clinic, Sudan. In addition, the study ...

OBJECTIVE Pemphigus is a rare autoimmune disease that may be fatal without proper medical intervention. It is a blistering disease that involves both the skin and mucus membranes, in which the most important causes of death comprise superimposed opportunistic infections and complications of long-term high-dose corticosteroid therapy or prolonged consumption of immune suppressant drugs. Skin les...

IMPORTANCE The main component of the first-line treatment of pemphigus vulgaris is high doses of systemic corticosteroids, but adverse effects of these drugs are frequent and sometimes severe. Rituximab has shown effectiveness as a corticosteroid-sparing agent or in case of relapse. To our knowledge, the effectiveness of rituximab as a first-line treatment without systemic corticosteroids has n...

Desmogleins (Dsgs), cadherin-type cell adhesion molecules, are targeted in skin-blistering diseases such as pemphigus and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS). The role of Dsg4, a new isoform, was investigated in these diseases. Dsg4 was recognized by 30 (77%) of 39 pemphigus sera containing anti-Dsg1 IgG but not by 16 pemphigus sera containing no anti-Dsg1 IgG or by 34 normal control se...

A wavelet multi-component decomposition algorithm has been used for data analysis of micro-Raman spectra of blood serum samples from patients affected by pemphigus vulgaris at different stages. Pemphigus is a chronic, autoimmune, blistering disease of the skin and mucous membranes with a potentially fatal outcome. Spectra were measured by means of a Raman confocal microspectrometer apparatus us...

Summary Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune blistering disease produced by IgG autoantibodies against desmoglein (Dsg)3. Lesions on the skin and mucosa can, in rare cases, be induced by radiotherapy. We report a patient with a history of microprolactinoma and PV, who had only oral lesions from the beginning of her illness but 2 months after treatment with radiotherapy for a breast neoplasi...

The recent availability of cDNA clones for pemphigus antigens has allowed the production of recombinant desmoglein 1 and desmoglein 3 molecules and the development of an ELISA approach in order to determine levels of antibodies to them. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between autoantibodies levels and the extent of both mucosal and skin lesions in 20 patients with pemphig...

Endemic Pemphigus Foliaceous is a chronic autoimmune bullous skin disease. Treatment with prednisone often produces excellent results, but resistant forms exist, requiring alternative therapy. Alternative treatments have been used in cases of corticosteroid-refractory pemphigus, showing favorable results. This case study focuses on an adolescent male with a clinical-pathological diagnosis of pe...

Paraneoplastic pemphigus is a rare, life-threatening autoimmune mucocutaneous blistering disease associated with underlying neoplasia, commonly lymphoproliferative tumors. Herein we report a case of paraneoplastic pemphigus with a unique autoantibody profile associated with a malignant thymoma. A 56-year-old female patient presented with relapsing oral ulcerations accompanied by erythematous pa...

The association of pemphigus and thymoma is real, although rare. We report a 73-year-old woman presenting with cutaneous bullac and erosions superimposed on erythematous and urticarial plaques, and a positive Nikolsky sign. She. had a large mediastinal mass that proved to be a benign thymoma. Her skin biopsy and direct immunofluorescence test were suggestive of superficial pemphigus.
