Extensive evidence indicates the influence of the cholinergic system on emotional processing. Previous findings provided new insights into the underlying mechanisms of long-term anxiety, showing that rats injected with a single systemic dose of pilocarpine--a muscarinic receptor (mAChR) agonist--displayed persistent anxiogenic-like responses when evaluated in different behavioral tests and time...
Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common type of epilepsy in adults. Of the animal models developed to investigate the pathogenesis of TLE, the one with pilocarpine-induced seizures is most often used. After pilocarpine administration in animals, three distinct periods--acute, latent, and chronic--can be distinguished according to their behavior. The present paper is the continuation of ...
The effect of Cavalheiro's pilocarpine model of epileptogenesis upon conditioned taste aversion (CTA), an important example of nondeclarative memory, was studied in adult Long Evans rats. Deterioration of CTA was studied during the silent period between pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE) and delayed spontaneous recurrent seizures. SE was elicited by i.p. injection of pilocarpine (320 m...
The use of intravenous Diamox with variable doses of Pilocarpine was investigated in the treatment of primary closed-angle glaucoma. It was concluded that one drop of Pilocarpine 3 to 4 hrs after intravenous Diamox is the only parasympathomimetic drug necessary to terminated an acute attack.
Carboxypeptidase A6 (CPA6) is an extracellular matrix metallocarboxypeptidase that modulates peptide and protein function by removal of hydrophobic C-terminal amino acids. Mutations in the human CPA6 gene that reduce enzymatic activity in the extracellular matrix are associated with febrile seizures, temporal lobe epilepsy, and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. The characterization of these human mu...
PURPOSE Mapping seizure susceptibility loci in mice provides a framework for identifying potentially novel candidate genes for human epilepsy. Using C57BL/6J × A/J chromosome substitution strains (CSS), we previously identified a locus on mouse chromosome 10 (Ch10) conferring susceptibility to pilocarpine, a muscarinic cholinergic agonist that models human temporal lobe epilepsy by inducing ini...
Two patients with an atypical form of band keratopathy following long-term pilocarpine treatment are described. The keratopathy is thought to have resulted from the presence of the preservative phenylmercuric nitrate in the pilocarpine drops. Symptoms of reduced acuity, visual haloes, and recurrent epithelial erosions were relieved by removal of the opacities.
The cholinergic mechanisms role determination in epileptogenesis attracts the attention of researchers. Pilocarpine administration rats contributes to chronic form epileptiform activity development characterized by presence a pronounced acute stage and an interictal period - free from behavioral convulsive reactions. We consider most important feature pilocarpine-induced seizures might be chang...
Abstract Desvenlafaxine succinate (DVS) inhibits serotonin reuptake selectively and is approved for major depressive disorders. This research investigated influence of DVS on modulating brain monoamine oxidative stress in mice. The antiepileptic potential (10, 20, or 30 mg/kg/i.p.) pentylenetetrazole (PTZ; 85 mg/kg) with i.p. route administration, strychnine (STR; 75 route, pilocarpine (400 s.c...
introduction: the use of radioactive iodine (131i) has become an important adjunct to the treatment of thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism. salivary gland has the ability to concentrate radioactive iodine under normal circumstances. salivary gland dysfunction and dry mouth are the common side effectsof high-dose radioiodine therapy. the purposeof this study was to determine the absorbed dose of...
