We present a systematic study of strain effects on the electronic band structure of the group-IIInitrides (AlN, GaN and InN). The calculations are based on density functional theory (DFT) with band-gap-corrected approaches including hybrid functional and quasiparticle G0W0 methods. We study strain effects under realistic strain conditions, hydrostatic pressure and biaxial stress. The strain-ind...

By a theorem of Mclean, the deformation space of an associative submanifold Y of an integrable G2-manifold (M,φ) can be identified with the kernel of a Dirac operator D/ : Ω(ν) → Ω(ν) on the normal bundle ν of Y . Here, we generalize this to the non-integrable case, and also show that the deformation space becomes smooth after perturbing it by natural parameters, which corresponds to moving Y t...

Mathematical models, for the stress analysis of symmetric multidirectional double cantilever beam DCB specimen using classical beam theory, first and higher-order shear deformation beam theories, have been developed to determine the Mode I strain energy release rate SERR for symmetric multidirectional composites. The SERR has been calculated using the compliance approach. In the present study, ...

The eigenvalue approach, using the Laplace and Fourier transforms, has been employed to find the analytical expressions for displacements and stresses at any point, as a result of an inclined line load, of an initially stressed orthotropic elastic medium. A plain strain problem has been studied. The results in the form of displacement and stress components have been obtained and discussed graph...

Scissoring in thick bars suppresses buckling behavior in serpentine traces that have thicknesses greater than their widths, as detailed in a systematic set of analytical and experimental studies. Scissoring in thick copper traces enables elastic stretchability as large as ≈350%, corresponding to a sixfold improvement over previously reported values for thin geometries (≈60%).

A comprehensive investigation of the pp*, np* and ps* excited states of xanthine has been performed with the CASSCF, CASPT2, CC2 and ADC(2) methods. The 7H-diketo and 9H-diketo tautomers of xanthine, which are the lowest-energy tautomers in the ground state, have been studied. Out-of-plane deformation of the purine system in the lowest pp* state as well as dissociation of the NH bonds in the lo...

A comprehensive investigation of the (1)pi pi*, (1)n pi* and (1)pi sigma* excited states of xanthine has been performed with the CASSCF, CASPT2, CC2 and ADC(2) methods. The 7H-diketo and 9H-diketo tautomers of xanthine, which are the lowest-energy tautomers in the ground state, have been studied. Out-of-plane deformation of the purine system in the lowest (1)pi pi* state as well as dissociation...

A nonlinear isotropic elastic block is subjected to a homogeneous deformation consisting of simple shear superposed on triaxial extension. Two new relations are established for this deformation which are valid for all nonlinear elastic isotropic materials, and hence are universal relations. The first is a relation between the stretch ratios in the plane of shear and the amount of shear when the...

BACKGROUND This study proposes and validates a method of measuring 3D strain in myocardium using a 3D Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) tissue-tagging sequence and a 3D optical flow method (OFM). METHODS Initially, a 3D tag MR sequence was developed and the parameters of the sequence and 3D OFM were optimized using phantom images with simulated deformation. This method then was validate...

Non-linear geometric deformation (or warping) is a useful tool for working with volumes. Unfortunately, the computational expense of performing the resampling needed to implement volume deformation has precluded its use in interactive applications. In this paper, we show how non-linear deformations can be integrated into interactive volume visualization allowing for dynamic deformations to be u...
