BACKGROUND Premature ovarian failure (POF) before 40 years of age from natural causes affects approximately 1% of adult women, with minor variations between ethnic groups. A recent case of ovarian transplantation between young monozygotic (MZ) twins in which one had undergone unexplained POF at 14 years has prompted a study of the prevalence of POF. METHODS Menopausal ages of 832 Australian a...

Two specific chromosome-targeting and gene regulatory systems are present in Drosophila melanogaster. The male X chromosome is targeted by the male-specific lethal complex believed to mediate the 2-fold up-regulation of the X-linked genes, and the highly heterochromatic fourth chromosome is specifically targeted by the Painting of Fourth (POF) protein, which, together with heterochromatin prote...

BACKGROUND Clinically, premature ovarian failure (POF) is defined as unexplained amenorrhoea (> 6 months) with a high FSH level (> 40 IU) before the age of 40 years. POF is a heterogeneous genetic disease with unknown aetiology. Inhibin and activin regulate the FSH level by their opposing actions and thus have been considered as strong candidate genes in the aetiology of POF. METHODS We have ...

(Shelling, 2000). Of interest is the lower copy number detection rate in our study (4%) compared with the detection rate of 48% in the recent publication by Quilter et al. (2010). Quilter et al. report that one of the 15 women with a CNV had primary amenorrhea. Possibilities to explain the differences in detection rate compared with this study may be differences in the age of onset of POF, or t...

In this work, a novel optical fiber sensor system for ultra-low perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) detection in aqueous solutions is proposed. It based on the connection, series, of two different plastic (POF) platforms: first chemical chip realized by using D-shaped POF with microholes filled specific molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP); second typical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) POF. particula...

OBJECTIVE To analyze DNA from women with premature ovarian failure (POF) for genome-wide copy-number variations (CNVs), focusing on novel autosomal microdeletions. DESIGN Case-control genetic association study. SETTING Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. PATIENT(S) Of 89 POF patients, eight experienced primary amenorrhea and 81 exhibited se...

Chemotherapy used to treat cancer may cause irreversible premature ovarian failure (POF). Of late, amniotic fluid stem cells (AFSCs) provide a novel source for regenerative medicine because of their primitive stage, low immunogenicity, and easy accessibility. In this study, we isolated AFSCs from transgenic mice that ubiquitously express enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP). These AFSCs e...

A case of peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) in the mandibular gingiva of a 17-year-old male is described. The lesion was asymptomatic, firm, pink, and present on the lingual alveolar mucosa interdentally between 43 and 44. Radiographic investigations revealed no significant findings. Excisional biopsy was performed for the lesion. Microscopic findings confirmed the diagnosis of POF.

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a relatively uncommon gingival growth that is considered to be reactive in nature and appear secondary to irritation or trauma. It presents as an exophytic growth with smooth surface. POF in older age group, observance of calcification in radiograph of excised specimen, pathologic migration, mobility and size greater than 2 cm is an occasional entity. The a...

Premature ovarian failure (POF) is a typical pathological disease of the reproductive system in aging females. Infection, inflammation, immune abnormalities, genetic mutation, radiotherapy and chemotherapy can cause POF. Tripterygium glycosides (TGs) are a component extracted from the Chinese herb Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f., also known as Huangteng. Although TGs have been used to treat var...
