A system was developed for teaching non-Japanese learners pronunciation of Japanese lexical accents. The system first identifies word accent types in a learner's utterance using F0 change between two adjacent morae as the feature parameter. As for the representative F0 value for a mora, we defined one with a good match to the perceived pitch. The system notices the user if his/her pronunciation...
According to achievement goal theory, individuals set mastery or performance goals to accomplish challenging tasks. In addition, they can either approach or avoid the goal they are achieving. Mastery goals show positive correlation to intrinsic motivation while performance goals are linked to extrinsic motivation. Goal setting also affects motivation for completing tasks and perception of self-...
This article presents a summary result of the survey on the need for mechatronics education. The study was conducted as a cooperation project between two teams established at two universities: AGH-UST from Poland and University of Stavanger (UiS) from Norway. Both companies and High School Pupils are surveyed in this project, but only feedbacks from the former are analyzed in this article. As a...
Network effect refers to the phenomenon that the value of connecting to a network depends on the present number of customers connected to that network. The self-reinforcement characteristic of the network effect strengthens the strong firms and weakens the weak firms. In the extreme form, network effects may produce a winner-take-all market. Therefore, competitive strategies are critical for co...
This paper investigates an approach for automated testing. A system for generating questions and tests is described, and a case study is given where such questions and tests were used for continuous assessment in a first-year mathematics course. The very positive feedback from the students and staff indicates that this approach to continuous assessment is an excellent way of helping students ma...
Given a pair of matrices representing a controllable linear system, its equivalence classes by the single or combined action of feedbacks, change of state and input variables, as well as their intersection are studied. In particular, it is proved that they are differentiable manifolds and their dimensions are computed. Some remarks concerning the effect of different kinds of feedbacks are derived.
In this paper we study the response to external disturbances of a double integrator with saturating feedback. For a class of disturbances that have bounded integrals over all intervals, we show that a linear static feedback law can always be designed to ensure boundedness of the states. Moreover, boundedness can be preserved if the disturbance is biased by a small DC signal. In the special case...
Within the contest cfselfdirected learning via the internet, the on-gofng ARTyFACTS Learning Environment research project currently under development at the Learning Technology Research Institute, University qc North London explores dgferent ways of re-exhibiting 3 0 objects virtually. This multimedia facility will ultimately help the remote student in their studies, the disabled person who can...

While studies on self-reinforcing mechanisms in information systems (IS) research rely on methodologies that focus on the technical level without fully accounting for such effects on the organizational level, management research relies on methodologies that concentrate researchers’ efforts on the organizational level. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the Path Biography Methodology, a q...
