UNLABELLED Bone ultrasound measures (QUSs) can assess fracture risk in the elderly. We compared three QUSs and their association with nonvertebral fracture history in 7562 Swiss women 70-80 years of age. The association between nonvertebral fracture was higher for heel than phalangeal QUS. INTRODUCTION Because of the high morbidity and mortality associated with osteoporotic fractures, it is e...

CONTEXT There is little information on the potential impact of serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] on bone health including turnover. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to determine the influence of 1,25(OH)2D and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] on bone health in middle-aged and older European men. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Men aged 40-79 years were recruited from populat...

A 3-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow was evaluated because of sudden onset of right hind limb lameness and pain with fetlock swelling for 2 days. Based on the history, clinical index scores and computed radiographic examinations, the case was accurately diagnosed to be a severely comminuted fracture of the proximal phalanx. This cow was assigned for conservative treatment with external coaptation...

OBJECTIVE To compare by cross sectional study the quantitative heel ultrasound (QUS) variables broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) and velocity of sound (VOS) in male powerlifters and controls. METHODS Twenty four powerlifters and 21 sedentary male controls were recruited to the study. All the powerlifters were members of the British Drug Free Powerlifting Association and actively competin...

BACKGROUND There have been few studies examining the associations between menstrual irregularity, androgens and bone mass in population-based samples of premenopausal women. This study aimed to describe the associations between menstrual pattern, testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and bone mass in a population-based sample of premenopausal women. METHODS Cross-sectional study (...

Asymptomatic symmetrical hyperphalangism of the fingers accompanied by foot anomalies is very rare. We present a 21-year-old man with anomalies in both hands and feet. He had short little, index, and middle fingers, long ring fingers, and clinodactyly of the little finger. He also had symmetrical brachydactyly of both feet. There were no other skeletal anomalies and his family members were norm...

Epidermoid cysts of the finger phalanx are rare pseudotumours. They are benign lesions with a satisfactory outcome after excision. We describe a case of an epidermoid cyst in the distal phalanx of the ring finger. It was treated successfully and the patient had excellent functional results and radiological healing at one-year follow-up.

DESCRIPTION A 61 year-old man was referred for management of a distal dorsal squamous cell carcinoma of the thumb with involved distal phalangeal periosteum. The dorsal cortex of the distal phalanx and all nail-producing and hyponychial tissues were excised and sent for pathology. No tumor was found; thus, the remaining volar distal phalanx was conserved.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Osseous resorption of the flexor surface of the distal phalanx of the horse has been identified previously using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging; however, little is known about the prevalence and characteristics of this lesion. OBJECTIVES To establish the MR prevalence of resorptive lesions in the flexor surface of the distal phalanx and identify concurrent lesion...
