BACKGROUND Enterococci normally inhabit the intestinal tract of humans and are also a potential pathogen in causing nosocomial infections. The increase in antibiotic resistance and transfer of antibiotic resistance gene to Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) due to co-colonization has increased its importance in research. The aim of the study was to evaluate local epidemiology of nasal and rectal...
OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence of concurrent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization in people and pets in the same household with a person or pet with an MRSA infection and to compare MRSA isolates by use of molecular techniques. DESIGN 2 cross-sectional evaluations conducted concurrently. SAMPLE POPULATION 24 dogs, 10 cats, and 56 humans in part 1 and 21 d...
BACKGROUND Colonization by Candida species is the most important predictor of the development of invasive fungal disease in preterm neonates, and the enteric reservoir is a major site of colonization. We evaluated the effectiveness of an orally supplemented probiotic (Lactobacillus casei subspecies rhamnosus; Dicoflor [Dicofarm spa]; 6 x 10(9) cfu/day) in the prevention of gastrointestinal colo...
Middle rectal artery is one of the important arteries supplying the rectum, along with the superior and inferior rectal arteries. Study of middle rectal artery was undertaken as it is important in surgeries of rectal carcinoma. .For the present study 40 pelvises were procured from the department of Anatomy of Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Pune.Variations were found in the origin of middle re...
BMT recipients experience severe immunodeficiency as a consequence of pre transplant radiation and chemotherapy, transient granulocytopenia before BMT, and post-transplant prevention and treatment of graft-versus-host disease with immunosupressive agents. So, opportunistic organisms including candida, aspergillus, mcor, and fusarium species, dematiaseous fungi and other usually “nonpath...
PCR-based identification of common colonization factor antigens of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli.
Colonization factor antigens (CFAs) of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) have been classified into several groups based on their distinct antigenicity. We describe here a PCR-based method to detect common CFAs of ETEC, which were characterized using conventional serology. This PCR assay is simple and sensitive for the detection of expressed CFA genes.
BACKGROUND Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus; GBS) is a significant cause of perinatal and neonatal infections worldwide. To detect GBS colonization in pregnant women, the CDC recommends isolation of the bacterium from vaginal and anorectal swab samples by growth in a selective enrichment medium, such as Lim broth (Todd-Hewitt broth supplemented with selective antibiotics), follow...
background: in intracavitary brachytherapy for gynecological cancers, various techniques are used to locate the anterior rectal wall nearest to the sources but there is no consensus on the best method to do so. this study aimed to compare a technique used routinely in some centers that employs a wire marker to locate the position of the maximum rectal dose point, versus the method recommended b...
objective: to detect whether the preoperative combined administration of rectal diclofenac and paracetamol is superior to placebo or rectal diclofenac alone for pain after abdominal hysterectomy. materials and methods: ninety female patients (american society of anesthesiologists (asa) physical status i-ii), scheduled for abdominal hysterectomy were recruited to this double blind trial and were...
