Tartan Swarm was an autonomous, multi-robot entry in the 2002 Mobile Robot Urban Search and Rescue Competition. The robots were designed to be low-cost, adaptable, and disposable. Emphasis was given to human detection techniques, The design did not feature localization or mapping capability. In the competition, the robots may have detected bodies, but were unable to report location or success.
In many fields employing robots, e.g., wheelchair robots, rescue robots, and construction robots, those which can move on rough terrain are desired. A robot with a simple mechanism and high mobility for all-terrain is discussed in this paper. A novel type of four-wheel-type mobile robot is developed, and its design is discussed from a functional viewpoint. In addition, strategies for moving on ...
Research efforts in urban search and rescue robotics have grown substantially in recent years. Two important robotic competitions (a robot physical league and a high-level infrastructure simulation league) were established in 2001 under the RoboCup umbrella to foster collaboration amongst institutions and to provide benchmark test environments for system evaluation. While these leagues play val...
Multi-Sensory Urban Search-and-Rescue Robotics: Improving the Operator’s Omni-Directional Perception
*Correspondence: Robert W. Lindeman, Human Interaction in Virtual Environments Laboratory, Department of Computer Science, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA 01609, USA e-mail: [email protected] The area of human–robot interaction deals with problems not only related to robots interacting with human beings but also with problems related to human beings interacting and...
A Robot suitable for automatically extinguishing the fire during fire accidents is presented in this paper. The Robot moves in the direction with respect to the fire intensity and avoids self-destruction using calcium silicate boards shielded with, that are capable of withstanding very high temperatures. The principle used, was designed and experimented at a temperature of 300°C. The temperatur...
Robots with bio-inspired locomotion systems, such as quadruped robots, have recently attracted significant scientific interest, especially those designed to tackle missions in unstructured terrains, search-and-rescue robotics. On the other hand, artificial intelligence systems allowed for improvement and adaptation of capabilities these robots based on specific imitating natural behavior animal...
Abstract Rescue robots are expected to carry out reconnaissance and dexterity operations in unknown environments comprising unstructured obstacles. Although a wide variety of designs implementations have been presented within the field rescue robotics, embedding all mobility, dexterity, capabilities single robot remains challenging problem. This paper explains design implementation Karo, mobile...
