Room-temperature ionic liquids exert vanishingly small vapor pressures under ambient conditions. Under reduced pressure, certain ionic liquids have demonstrated volatility, and they are thought to vaporize as intact cation-anion ion pairs. However, ion pair vapors are difficult to detect because their concentration is extremely low under these conditions. In this Letter, we report the products ...

Developing green solvents with low toxicity and cost is an important issue for the biochemical industry. Synthetic ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents have received considerable attention due to their negligible volatility at room temperature, high solubilization ability, and tunable selectivity. However, the potential toxicity of the synthetic ionic liquids and the solid state at room tem...

Room temperature ionic liquids (ILs), especially protic ionic liquids (PILs), are used in many areas of the chemical sciences. Ionicity, the extent of proton transfer, is a key parameter which determines many physicochemical properties and in turn the suitability of PILs for various applications. The spectrum of computational chemistry techniques applied to investigate ionic liquids includes cl...

During this work, a novel series of hydrophobic room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) based on five ether functionalized sulfonium cations bearing the bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide, [NTf2 ]- anion were synthesized and characterized. Their physicochemical properties, such as density, viscosity and ionic conductivity, electrochemical window, along with thermal properties including phase tran...

Ionic liquids (ILs) are non-molecular solvents; specifically, molten salts with low melting points, often below 100 °C and even room temperature, thus allowing these solvents to remain liquid [...]

When mixed with imidazolium ion-based room-temperature ionic liquid, pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes formed gels after being ground. The heavily entangled nanotube bundles were found to untangle within the gel to form much finer bundles. Phase transition and rheological properties suggest that the gels are formed by physical cross-linking of the nanotube bundles, mediated by local molec...

A series of sulfonium halides bearing allyl groups have been prepared and characterized. Anion metathesis with Li[Tf2N] and Ag[N(CN)2] resulted in sulfonium-based ionic liquids which exhibit low viscosities at room temperature. The solid state structure of one of the halide salts was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

[reaction--see text] Alcohols were efficiently converted to alkyl halides using 1-n-butyl-3-methylylimidazolium halides (ionic liquids) in the presence of Brønsted acids at room temperature. The alkyl halide products were easily isolated from the reaction mixture via simple decantation or extraction, and the 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation could be recycled for further uses.

A facile reaction of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIm]Ac) with dichloromethane at room temperature was observed with esters among the products. This esterification can be exploited for mild solvent-free esterification with a range of other carboxylate-based ionic liquids and alkyl halides.

An excitation and emission wavelength dependent non-exponential fluorescence decay behaviour of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) has been noted. Average fluorescence lifetimes have been found to vary by a factor of three or more. Red emitting dyes dissolved in RTILs are found to follow hitherto unobserved single exponential fluorescence decay behaviour.
