Deep submillimetre(submm)-wave surveys made over the last three years using the SCUBA camera at the 15-m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) have revealed a new population of very luminous high-redshift galaxies. The properties of this population, and their contribution to the intensity of the extragalactic background radiation field are described briefly, especially in the context of the SCUB...

SCUBA-2 is an innovative 10000 pixel bolometer camera operating at submillimetre wavelengths on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The camera has the capability to carry out wide-field surveys to unprecedented depths, addressing key questions relating to the origins of galaxies, stars and planets. With two imaging arrays working simultaneously in the atmospheric windows at 450 and 850μm,...

A human diver in the air is an example of a nonholonomic system with drift. In this paper, we present a dynamic model of the diver performing planar dives and examine a simple learning approach to the control problem. Finally, we present a proposal for a general, hierarchical, learning controller for systems with many degrees of freedom.

Environmental conditions and increased physical activity during scuba diving are followed by increased production of free radicals and disturbed redox balance. Redox balance disorder is associated with damage of cellular components, changes of cellular signaling pathways and alterations of gene expression. Oxidative stress leads to increased expression of sirtuins (SIRTs), molecules which play ...

The sub-mm waveband has opened up for cosmology, and through this window we can hope to glimpse some answers to a number of related puzzles: What are the brightest sub-mm galaxies? What sorts of galaxies make up the Far-IR Background (FIB)? When did the Universe form the bulk of its stars? How important is dust obscuration for obtaining a full star-formation census? SCUBA has been instrumental ...

We present single-cell clustering using bifurcation analysis (SCUBA), a novel computational method for extracting lineage relationships from single-cell gene expression data and modeling the dynamic changes associated with cell differentiation. SCUBA draws techniques from nonlinear dynamics and stochastic differential equation theories, providing a systematic framework for modeling complex proc...

We present a deep, new 1200μm survey of the ELAIS N2 and Lockman Hole fields using the Max Planck Millimeter Bolometer array (MAMBO). The areas surveyed are 160 arcmin in ELAIS N2 and 197 arcmin in the Lockman Hole, covering the entire SCUBA ‘8 mJy Survey’. In total, 27 (44) sources have been detected at a significance ≥4.0σ (≥3.5σ). The primary goals of the survey were to investigate the relia...

Aim Gorgonian forests are among the most complex of subtidal habitats in Mediterranean Sea, supporting high biodiversity and providing diverse ecosystem services. Despite their iconic status, geographical distribution condition gorgonian species is poorly known. Using multiple online data sources, our primary aims were to compile, map analyse observations Italian coastal waters assess biologica...

Hawai ? i coral reefs are essential ecosystems providing resources in the form of food and recreation as well stabilizing nearshore biodiversity. The Seattle Aquarium has exhibited reef fishes corals since mid-1980s to educate guests about these critical ecosystems. In 2009, collaboration with i’s Division Aquatic Resources (DAR) Washington State University, aquarium expanded its conservation w...

In recent years, scuba diving has become accessible worldwide. The average age of female scuba divers is similar to their window of fertility, and many women dive annually without knowing their pregnancy status. These women seek advice concerning the potential teratogenicity of diving, and whether they can continue the pregnancy. Nevertheless, little is known about the consequences of scuba div...
