This paper argues that a semiotic-conceptual framework is suitable for knowledge representation because it combines conceptual structures with semiotic aspects. The advantages of such a framework are discussed and explained using an example from an ontology language.
General abstract: Here we introduce biosemiotics as a field of research that develops models of life processes focusing on their informational aspects. Peirce’s general concept of semiosis can be used to analyze such processes, and provide a powerful basis for understanding the emergence of meaning in living systems, by contributing to the construction of a theory of biological information. Pei...
Each software entity should have as high quality as possible in the context of limited resources. A specification of a software quality measure is a kind of software entity. Existing studies about the evaluation of software measures do not pay enough attention to the quality of specifications of measures. Semiotics has been used as a basis in order to evaluate the quality of different types of ...
The growth in importance of communities within organisational settings is a sign of a change in paradigm. When management and organisational theory introduce the critical notion of communities , in parallel to the concepts of collaborative work and of knowledge sharing, there is an internal revolution going on. Brown & Duguid, 1991) has a critical role to play in today's development of manageme...
This paper introduces a process for developing Web GIS (Geographic Information Systems) applications. This process integrates the NDT (Navigational Development Techniques) approach with some of the Organizational Semiotic models. The use of the proposed development process is illustrated for a real application: the construction of the WebMaps system. WebMaps is a Web GIS system whose main goal ...
In this article I trace the historical development of Peirce’s semiotic rhetoric from its early appearance as a sub-discipline of symbolistic to its mature incarnation as one of the three main branches of the science of semiotic, and argue that this change in status is a symptom of Peirce’s broadening semiotic interest. The article shows how the evolution of Peirce’s theory of signs is linked t...
Clinical pathway (CP) is the standard way to manage medical activities in order to improve the efficiency and minimize the cost of healthcare service. However current application of CPs can hardly adapt to the dynamic and complex clinical processes which involve the coordination of social agents in hospital. This paper focuses on developing a multi-agent modeling method to build up the system t...
Building Information Modelling (BIM) seeks to integrate information and business processes throughout the entire building life cycle. This technology is able to generate 3D models that semantically represent facility information dynamically over the life cycle of a building, but is limited when it comes to meeting the needs arising from the operation and management of facility services. There i...
E-learning tools design is intended to mediate communication between the student (user) and the software involving teacher intervention. The design process could be taken as a dialogue between teacher and student. Thus, the main actors in the teaching/learning process are involved during the software-design process in this semiotic perspective. We aim to introduce a model for designing e-learni...
