The virological surveillance of 3582 wild waterfowl in northern Australia from 2004 to 2009 for avian influenza virus (AIV) found an apparent prevalence (AP) of 1% (31 of 2989 cloacal swabs; 95% CI: 0.71%-1.47%) using a Taqman Type A real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test and no viral isolations from 593 swabs tested by the embryonating chicken egg culture method. From s...

Lyme disease is emerging in eastern and central Canada, and most cases are diagnosed using the two-tier serological test (Enzyme Immuno Assay [EIA] followed by Western blot [WB]). Simplification of this algorithm would be advantageous unless it impacts test performance. In this study, accuracy of individual proteins of the IgG WB algorithm in predicting the overall test result in samples from C...

The Italian workers D'Alessandro, Oddo, Comes, and Dardanoni (1949) and D'Alessandro and Dardanoni (1953) described the isolation of four serologically active components of Reiter's treponeme. These contributions represent milestones in the sero-diagnosis of syphilis since they were the initial systematic investigations into the serological components of treponemes. One of the components was co...

Tularaemia is an emerging anthropozoonosis transmitted by contact with infected animals and through arthropod bites, inhalation, or ingestion. We describe a pulmonary nodule suggesting cancer in a 70-year-old man. Histological analysis excluded neoplasia, and bacteriological culture excluded tuberculosis. Serological testing and PCR Francisella were positive for this hunter patient, then treate...

Retrospective analysis of IgG test results and patterns for measles, mumps, and rubella revealed generally high seropositivity rates, with that of mumps being the lowest. A simplified cost analysis shows that when there is a suspicion of nonimmunity, serological testing may be cheaper than vaccination.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a common infection among HIV infected people. HSV type specific serologies permit the diagnosis of previously unrecognised HSV-2 infection. While substantial psychosocial morbidity has been associated with a clinical diagnosis of genital herpes, the burden associated with a serological diagnosis of HSV-2 is unclear. This study prospec...
