Clusters of orthologous groups [COGs; Tatusov, R. L., Koonin, E. V. & Lipman, D. J. (1997) Science 278, 631-637] were identified for a set of 13 completely sequenced herpesviruses. Each COG represented a family of gene products conserved across several herpes genomes. These families were defined without using an arbitrary threshold criterion based on sequence similarity. The COG technique was m...

The effect of ganciclovir [9-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-propoxymethyl)guanine] on herpes simplex virus type 1 DNA and protein synthesis was studied. Ganciclovir markedly inhibited the synthesis of viral DNA and gamma proteins in a dose-dependent manner. However, the synthesis of viral beta proteins was significantly increased by ganciclovir in the later stage of infection.

The data presented in this review reveal the transforming potential and oncogenic capability of herpes simplex viruses in cultured cells and in experimental animals, respectively. Unfortunately, the role of these agents in human cancer, especially cervical, cannot be unequivocally established through the indirect approaches used, but circumstantial evidence that these viruses represent potentia...

BACKGROUND The herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) tegument protein, VP22 has been reported to have the property of intercellular transport. The previous studies have shown that following expression of a fusion protein containing VP22; it spreads to every cell in a monolayer and concentrates in the nucleus. In spite of these reports, some studies have shown that VP22 trafficking and its nucleus...

When CV-1 mammalian cells were X-irradiated before infection with ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated herpes simplex virus, an increase in survival of this virus was observed. X-ray reactivation is proposed as the name of this phenomenon by analogy with UV reactivation. The amount of survival enhancement was about the same as that found for UV reactivation in the same virus-host system. The enhancement...

Enumeration and characterization of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-specific CD8(+) T lymphocytes are tedious and indirect. We quantitated antigen-specific CD8(+) T cells during acute and secondary stages of HSV infection using intracellular gamma interferon production upon stimulation with virus or immunodominant peptide. Results show a substantial increase in the number of CD8(+) T cells which was...

Several studies with small laboratory animals in which low rates of malignant changes of the cervix have followed intravaginal inoculation with herpes simplex virus type 2 have been reported. Recently, we found that, following intravaginal inoculation, Cebus monkeys develop cervical infections and lesions similar to those found in humans. A large-scale investigation is now in progress to determ...
