OBJECTIVE We describe the significance of detecting focal areas of hypermetabolism in the breast in patients undergoing PET/CT for reasons other than for breast cancer detection or staging. CONCLUSION When evaluated, almost all of the abnormal foci detected in the breast subsequently proved to be breast carcinoma, specifically infiltrating ductal carcinoma.
Immunohistochemistry using antibodies to cytokeratin 8 can serve as a valuable diagnostic tool for the differentiation of lobular from ductal carcinomas of the breast. In contrast with ductal carcinomas, which exhibit a peripheral-predominant immunostaining pattern, adjacent tumor cells “molding” to each other, lobular carcinomas exhibit a ring-like perinuclear immunostaining pattern, creating ...
Adenosquamous carcinoma is a rare tumor with coexisting elements of infiltrating squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. This tumor is reported to arise in different organs but rarely in the oesophagus. In most cases, it shows highly aggressive biological behaviour with high propensity to regional lymph-node metastasis and poor prognosis. We describe the management of a patient with an aggr...
Male breast cancer is rare. The most common histological subtypes include invasive carcinoma "of no special type" and papillary carcinoma. Other variants, including pure micropapillary carcinoma, have been described as well but are extremely rare. Pure micropapillary carcinoma has been recently characterized by a C-MYC gene amplification in women. We report here, occurring in a 73-year-old man,...
The prognostic relevance of innate immune cells infiltrating colorectal carcinoma lesions is highly debated. By evaluating the expression of myeloperoxidase (MPO) as a marker of neutrophil granulocytes in a large cohort of colorectal carcinoma specimens, we have observed that robust tumor-infiltration by MPO+ cells correlates with improved patient survival independently of other histopathologic...
www.ums.ac.uk from the medial border of the right atrium, extending through the tricuspid valve and into the right ventricle with infiltration of the myocardium (Figure 3). Histology demonstrated squamous cell carcinoma infiltrating the myocardium. The histological appearances were similar to those of the patient’s previous tongue tumour (Figure 4), confirming a diagnosis of a cardiac metastasi...
The CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cell (Treg) is a special kind of T cell subset. Studies have showed that Treg cells are involved in a number of physiological processes and pathologic conditions such as autoimmune diseases, transplantation tolerance and cancer. Tregs with unique capacity for immune inhibition can impair anti-tumour immunity and help tumor cells to escape from immune surveillance. The...
We have treated surgically 11 patients with thyroid carcinoma that had infiltrated into the trachea. Three patients had primary tumours, and eight had recurrent tumours after previous operations. Sleeve resection of trachea was performed where thyroid carcinoma had proliferated; the trachea was reconstructed by end-to-end anastomosis. In two patients 10 rings of the trachea were resected. In th...
