There is an increasing need to assess the service life of components containing defect which operate at high temperature. This paper describes the current fracture mechanics concepts that are employed to predict cracking of engineering materials at high temperatures under static and cyclic loading. The relationship between these concepts and those of high temperature life assessment methods is ...

Nonintrusive, off-body flow barometry in Mach 2 airflow has been demonstrated in a large-scale supersonic wind tunnel using seedless laser-induced thermal acoustics (LITA). The static pressure of the gas flow is determined with a novel differential absorption measurement of the ultrasonic sound produced by the LITA pump process. Simultaneously, the streamwise velocity and static gas temperature...

We consider finite temperature properties of the Ising chain in a transverse field in the vicinity of its zero temperature, second order quantum phase transition. New universal crossover functions for static and dynamic correlators of the “spin” operator are obtained. The static results follow from an early lattice computation of McCoy, and a method of analytic continuation in the space of coup...

We study the temperature-dependent dephasing rate of excitons in chains of chromophores, accounting for scattering on static disorder as well as acoustic phonons in the host matrix. From this we find a power-law temperature dependence of the absorption linewidth, in excellent quantitative agreement with experiments on dye aggregates. We also propose a relation between the linewidth and the exci...

We investigate by scattering techniques the structure of water-based soft composite materials comprising a crystal made of Pluronic block-copolymer micelles arranged in a face-centered cubic lattice and a small amount (at most 2% by volume) of silica nanoparticles, of size comparable to that of the micelles. The copolymer is thermosensitive: it is hydrophilic and fully dissolved in water at low...

We study the static as well as the glassy or dynamical transition in the meanfield p-state Potts glass. By numerical solution of the saddle point equations we investigate the static and the dynamical transition for all values of p in the nonperturbative regime p > 4. The static and dynamical Edwards-Anderson parameter increase with p logarithmically. This makes the glassy transition temperature...

We study the parity-breaking terms generated by the box diagram in 2+1 dimensional thermal QED. These lead, in the long wave limit, to a gauge invariant extensive action which behaves as 1/T at high temperature. In contrast, the effective action in the static limit involves leading non-extensive terms proportional to 1/T 3 at high temperature, which violate large gauge invariance. We derive a n...

Using numerical techniques we study the zero temperature properties of a substitutional magnetic impurity in a one-dimensional correlated system described by the Hubbard model with repulsive interaction U . We find that, while the static spin correlation maintains a 2kF periodicity, the charge correlations show Friedel oscillations with a 4kF periodicity for large values of U . The static on-si...

We study numerically the finite temperature and frequency mobility of a particle coupled by a local interaction to a system of spinless fermions in one dimension. We find that when the model is integrable (particle mass equal to the mass of fermions) the static mobility diverges. Further, an enhanced mobility is observed over a finite parameter range away from the integrable point. We present a...

We examine the parity violating terms generated by the box diagram in QED3 at finite temperature. These lead to both extensive as well as non-extensive effective actions, which have very distinct behavior in the long wavelength and static limits. We discuss a large gauge Ward identity for the leading terms in the static limit, whose solution coincides with the effective action proposed earlier.
