Plasma densities produced by halfand full-wavelength (HW and FW) helical antennae in helicon discharges are compared. It is found that HW antennae are more efficient than FW ones in producing plasma downstream from the antenna. The measured wave amplitudes and the apparent importance of downstream ionization do not agree with computations.

Sports hold a special place in the hearts of many Americans. Indeed, athletic competition has come to define and shape our understanding in many ways of what it means to be American. Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) play a critical role in immune recognition, and many alleles confer susceptibility to infectious and autoimmune diseases. How these deleterious alleles persist in populations is controversial. One hypothesis postulates that MHC heterozygote superiority emerges over multiple infections because MHC-mediated resistance is generally dominant and m...

Two studies used a thought-listing technique to examine perceived superiority, or the inclination to regard one's own relationship as better than (and not as bad as) others' relationships. Consistent with the claim that this is a motivated phenomenon—and motivated in part by strong commitment—Study 1 revealed that (a) tendencies toward perceived superiority and (b) the commitment-superiority li...

The anger superiority effect shows that an angry face is detected more efficiently than a happy face. We investigated whether the anger superiority effect is influenced by top-down control, especially working memory (WM). Participants remembered a colour and then searched for differen...
