The chemical and electronic properties of surfaces to a large extent are controlled by defects. Defects facilitate the adsorption of gases and serve as reactive sites for chemical reactions. Furthermore, surface defects are a key to the nucleation, growth, and stability of metal clusters on metal oxide surfaces. This paper summarizes recent studies to assess the role of defects on Au cluster nu...

Large π-conjugated molecules, when in contact with a metal surface, usually retain a finite electronic gap and, in this sense, stay semiconducting. In some cases, however, the metallic character of the underlying substrate is seen to extend onto the first molecular layer. Here, we develop a chemical rationale for this intriguing phenomenon. In many reported instances, we find that the conjugati...

The crystal structure of holo D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) from the extreme thermophile Thermus aquaticus has been solved at 2.5 Angstroms resolution. To study the determinants of thermostability, we compare our structure to four other GAPDHs. Salt links, hydrogen bonds, buried surface area, packing density, surface to volume ratio, and stabilization of alpha-helices and b...

Oxygen-containing carboxyl, hydroxyl, and phenolic surface functional groups of soil organic and mineral components play central roles in binding metal ions, and biochar amendment can provide means of increasing these surface ligands in soil. In this study, positive matrix factorization (PMF) was first employed to fingerprint the principal components responsible for the stabilization of heavy m...

Target-specific DNA delivery requires vectors that combine stability in the biological milieu, receptor-mediated uptake into target cells, and intracellular activation to mediate transgene expression. This is achieved here using polymer-coated vectors based on plasmid DNA complexed with a reductively degradable polycation (RPC), designed for intercellular degradation. The RPC were prepared by o...

Explicit formulas of smooth time-varying state feedbacks, which make the origin of an underactuated surface vessel globally uniformly asymptotically stable, are proposed. The construction of the feedback extensively relies on the backstepping approach. The feedbacks constructed are time-periodic functions.
