The shape of wake behind a wind turbine is normally assumed to have a hat shape for the models used in wind farm layout optimization purposes; however, it is know from experimental tests and numerical simulations that this is not a real assumption. In reality, the results of actual measurements and detailed numerical simulation show that the velocity in wake region has a S-shape profile. The pr...

Mesenchymal condensation is critical for organogenesis, yet little is known about how this process is controlled. Here we show that Fgf8 and Sema3f, produced by early dental epithelium, respectively, attract and repulse mesenchymal cells, which cause them to pack tightly together during mouse tooth development. Resulting mechanical compaction-induced changes in cell shape induce odontogenic tra...

1. Abstract A well designed capacitive micro-machined switch requires small electrostatic pull-in force to easy switch-on and high natural frequencies to fast switch-off. Since the change of geometrical parameters of the bridge (moving part of the switch) affects contrary to one of these aspects, one could search for a shape of the bridge to obtain optimum functioning. The paper deals with desi...

In this paper, we introduce three new classes of open sets in a general Euclidean space RN . It is shown that every class of open sets is compact under the Hausdorff distance. The result is then applied to a shape optimization problem of elliptic equation. The existence of the optimal solution is presented.

This study, in a broad sense, fills in the missing parts in previous efforts at pullback stripping mode design with a dipping coal seam. Three different spoiling procedures have been developed: the normal mode, where the coal seam is flat/nearly flat; the uphill mode, where the coal seam is dipping and the dragline spoils uphill; and the downhill mode, where the coal seam is again dipping but t...

This study presents shape optimization of a gravity dam imposing stability and principal stress constraints. A gravity dam is a large scale hydraulic structure consisting of huge amount of concrete material. Hence, an optimum design gives a cost-benefit structure due to the fact that small changes in shape of dam cross-section leads to large saving of concrete volume. T...

A fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) fixed prosthesis is an innovative alternative to a traditional metal restoration, as it is a conservative treatment method. This case report demonstrates a detailed procedure for restoring a missing anterior tooth with an FRC. A 44-year-old woman visited our department with an avulsed tooth that had fallen out on the previous day and was completely dry. This t...
