We report on initial experience with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) Layer 00 Detector. Layer 00 is an innovative, low-mass, silicon detector installed in CDF during the upgrade for Run 2A of the Tevatron. Noise pickup present during operation at CDF is discussed. An event-by-event pedestal correction implemented by CDF is presented. This off-line solution prevents L00 from being used i...

In this contribution we present new developments and results for the LIT track reconstruction package for CBM in the CbmRoot framework. The reconstruction package is organized to be flexible with respect to feasibility studies of different physics channels and to optimization of the detector geometries. The tracking software has been redesigned to make it more general and to simplify the suppor...

MACRO was a large multipurpose underground detector located in the Hall B of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The detector, which took data until December 2000, was arranged in a modular structure of six “supermodules” with global dimensions of 76.5 × 12 × 9.3m and a total acceptance of ∼ 10, 000 msr to an isotropic flux of particles. It was made by several layers of liquid scintillatio...

After a short review of Q-balls properties, in this paper we discuss their interaction with matter, and their energy losses in the earth, for a large range of velocities. These calculations are used to compute the fractional angular acceptance of a detector at Gran Sasso Laboratory. Furthermore we computed the light yield in liquid scintillators, the ionization in streamer tubes and the Restric...

This paper describes an experimental search for GUT magnetic monopoles in the MACRO experiment using the nuclear track subdetector CR39. After discussing the working principle, the charge resolution and the calibration of the detector, the experimental procedure for searching for magnetic monopoles is described. Since no candidates were found, the upper flux limits obtained by the MACRO CR39 us...

The ATLAS Pixel Detector is the innermost layer of the ATLAS tracking system and will contribute significantly to the ATLAS track and vertex reconstruction. The detector consists of identical sensor-chip-hybrid modules, arranged in three barrels in the centre and three disks on either side for the forward region. The position of the pixel detector near the interaction point requires excellent r...

Particle track reconstruction capabilities of the silicon tracking detector system have been studied. As the multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) induces unavoidable uncertainties on the coordinate measurement, the corresponding error estimates and the associated correlations have been used to find the best track fit parameters and their errors. Finally it permits to find the proper particle chara...

The effects of UVC exposure on the track etch rate Vt and the detector sensitivity V of CR-39 SSNTDs were investigated through the diameters and depths of alpha-particle tracks. Both the bulk etch rate Vb and Vt increased but V decreased. The track diameters and depths were used to derive a V function for CR-39 detectors with and without UV irradiation. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
