Thrashing in transaction processing systems can be prevented by controlling the number of concurrently running transactions. Because the optimal concurrency level strongly depends on the workload characteristics which may change in time, two algorithms for adaptive adjustment of an upper bound for the concurrency level are proposed and compared by simulation.
In a mobile environment. system and application performance is impacted by mobili ty factors such as varying bandwidt h. frequent disconnect ion, and changing locations. These factors make rnobility information more important in the design of distributed algorit hms. However, at present , no general mode1 exists for exploit ing the availability of mobility information. Focusing on this issue. t...
We study the feasibility of execution autonomy in systems with asynchronous transaction processing based on epsilon-serializability (ESR). The abstract correctness criteria deened by ESR are implemented by techniques such as asynchronous divergence control and asynchronous consistency restoration. Concrete application examples in a distributed environment, such as banking, are described in orde...

This handbook is a compendium of the popular performance and price/performance metrics for database systems and transaction processing systems. Each benchmark tries to answer the question: “What computer should I buy?” Clearly, the answer question is “The system that does the job with the lowest cost-of-ownership”. Cost-of-ownership includes project risks, programming costs, operations costs, h...
In this paper we discuss the design of a parallel database machine and the desirability of using simulation experiments of the machine at an early stage of the design process as a way of assessing the performance of the finished machine. We discuss the reasoning behind the choice of a distributed discreteevent simulation model, and design and implementation issues in this approach. Lastly we di...
Modern enterprise applications are currently undergoing a complete paradigm shift away from traditional transactional processing to combined analytical and transactional processing. This challenge of combining two opposing query types in a single database management system results in additional requirements for transaction management as well. In this paper, we discuss our approach to achieve hi...
This paper proposes various strategies for the checking of integrity constraints in multidatabase systems which support nested transactions. The solution presented in 8] for centralized environments is extended. The principle of this solution consists of designating a sub-transaction which controls the checking of each integrity constraint. This sub-transaction is the smallest common ancestor (...
The OSI Standards committee (ISO SC21 Working Group 8) has defined the distributed transaction processing (DTP) standards that consist of a reference model, service definitions and protocol specifications. The reference model can be used for defining and building distributed transaction processing systems and applications. X/Open is an industrial standards organisation that has also defined a r...
