The activity of arginine decarboxylase (ADC), a key enzyme in plant polyamine biosynthesis, was manipulated in two generations of transgenic tobacco plants. Second-generation transgenic plants overexpressing an oat ADC cDNA contained high levels of oat ADC transcript relative to tobacco ADC, possessed elevated ADC enzyme activity and accumulated 10-20-fold more agmatine, the direct product of A...

Brassinosteroids (BRs) play an essential role in plant growth, development, and responses to diverse abiotic stresses. However, previous studies mainly analyzed how exogenous BRs influenced plant physiological reactions to drought stress, therefore, genetic evidences for the endogenous BRs-mediated regulation of plant responses still remain elusive. In this study, a key BRs biosynthetic gene, S...

In order to understand the role of cytosolic antioxidant enzymes in drought stress protection, transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi) plants overexpressing cytosolic Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (cytsod) (EC 1.15.1.1) or ascorbate peroxidase (cytapx) (EC 1.11.1.1) alone, or in combination, were produced and tested for tolerance against mild water stress. The results showed that the sim...

Proline, an amino acid, plays important role in plants, and it is involved stress resistance development. Earlier, to study the proline maintaining we obtained genetically modified transgenic lines of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) with reduced activity dehydrogenase (PDH, degradation gene) increased content proline. Transgenic plants demonstrated greater high concentrations NaCl, drought, low ...

The basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors play important regulatory roles, influencing plant growth and responses to environmental stresses. In the present study, 132 bZIP genes identified in tobacco genome were classified into 11 groups with Arabidopsis tomato members, based on results of a phylogenetic analysis. An examination gene structures conserved motifs revealed relatively e...

Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud. is a very important hard woody plant, an extremely fast-growing tree and produce timber. Therefore, there is a demand to produce transgenic Paulownia plant resistant to bacterial infection. Microbial infection (especially bacterial one) is serious sever and cause a loss in plant productivity as they bear upon the character and amount of plan...

The rapid and effective activation of disease resistance responses is essential for plant defense against pathogen attack. These responses are initiated when pathogen-derived molecules (elicitors) are recognized by the host. We have developed a strategy for creating novel disease resistance traits whereby transgenic plants respond to infection by a virulent pathogen with the production of an el...

Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are implicated in regulating plant growth, development, and response to the environment. However, the underlying mechanisms are unknown because of the lack of information about their substrates. Using a conditional gain-of-function transgenic system, we demonstrated that the activation of SIPK, a tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) stress-responsive MAPK, induc...

A full-length cDNA copy of the genome of Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) was introduced into the genome of tobacco and potato plants by Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Transgenic lines were obtained in which the transgene was readily detected by PCR with DNA extracted from T(1) tobacco seedlings and clonally multiplied potato plants. PLRV-specific genomic and sub- genomic RNAs, ...

Transgenic tobacco plants stably expressing recombinant FaeG, which is the major subunit and adhesin of K88ad fimbriae, were obtained. Analysis of sera from immunized mice indicates that in mice, the immunogenicity induced by plant-derived FaeG protein is comparable to that generated with traditional approaches.
