Venous air embolism is a rare complication during transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). We report a case of air embolism during TURP under general anesthesia in a 56-year-old man. Incorrect assembly of the resectoscope-drain aspiration system caused rapid entrainment of air into the vein of the prostate bed. Rapid recognition of the condition and prompt treatment are required.
In 1994 MetLife paid claims from group health policy insured for 1,004 radical prostatectomies and 1,597 transurethral resections of the prostate (TURPs). The total average hospital and physician charges were $18,680 and $7,600, respectively, with marked geographic variation evident for both procedures by area and state. The Pacific area led with a total charge of $20,790 for a radical prostate...
This study sought to evaluate the efficacy and safety of photoselective vaporisation (PVP) vs. transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Eligible studies were identified from electronic databases (Cochrane Library, PubMed and EMBASE). The database search, quality assessment and data extraction were performed independently by two reviewe...
PURPOSE Many patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) have not only voiding symptoms but also storage symptoms. Despite the many types of treatment that have been developed for BPH, storage symptoms persist. We conducted an assessment of the efficacy of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and the change in the International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS) storage sub-score aft...
INTRODUCTION This was a prospective, randomized clinical trial to compare the safety, efficacy, and medium-term durability of holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) combined with mechanical morcellation versus standard transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for the surgical treatment of patients with bladder outlet obstruction due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The pa...
We report a case of prostatic abscess in a 22-year-old man with metastatic testicular cancer being treated by BEP (bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin) chemotherapy. This abscess was successfully treated by surgical drainage with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) under the guidance of transrectal ultrasound, allowing the patient to continue be receiving BEP without significant inter...
INTRODUCTION The aim of our study was to evaluate the significance of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) to detect prostate cancer (PCa). A comparison was performed of the TURP specimens of patients undergoing high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) with the core biopsies. MATERIALS AND METHODS TURP before undergoing HIFU therapy was performed in 106 patients without neoadjuvant ...
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess surgical, oncologic and functional results after robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP) with and without previous transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). METHODS Between December 2005 and January 2010, 200 patients underwent RALP, of whom 16 (8%) had received previous TURP and 184 (92%) had not. Perioperative and postoper...
BACKGROUND The ability of 5α-reductase inhibitors (5ARIs) to decrease blood loss during transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) remains controversial. We aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to establish the role of 5ARI use prior to TURP. METHODS We searched studies from the electronic databases PubMed, Emba...
