In this paper we analyse and evaluate the capabilities of popular game engines to simulate and interact with soft objects. We discuss how these engines can be used for simulated surgical training applications, determine their shortcomings and make suggestions how game engines can be extended to make them more suitable for such applications.

Introduction: Occupational therapy and performing specific motor activities are among the healing processes for injured people that should be followed by patients in need after the doctor’s prescription. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of using virtual reality environments and interacting with hardware designed for the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with upper l...

Recognizing clinical style is essential for generating intelligent guidance in virtual reality simulators for dental skill acquisition. The aim of this study was to determine the potential of Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) in matching novices' tooth cutting sequences with those of experts. Forty dental students and four expert dentists were enrolled to perform access opening to the root canals with...

Modern interactive environments like virtual reality simulators or augmented reality systems often require reliable information about a user’s future intention in order to increase their immersion and usefulness. For many of such systems, where human locomotion is an essential way of interaction, knowing a user’s future walking direction provides relevant information. This paper explains how he...

Introduction and purpose: Balance disorder and falling is one of the most important consequences of aging, worrying consequences that entails, including bone fractures .The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of eight weeks virtual reality-based balance training on the balance of elderly men. Materials and Methods: The present study was a semi-experimental and applied to 26 elder...

BACKGROUND Simulation is the most effective and safe way to train laparoscopic surgeons in an era of limited work hours, lack of funding, and increasing malpractice costs. However, the costs associated with the use of virtual reality simulators are significant, and although very technically sophisticated they still lack tactile feedback. We are proposing a physical reality simulator, the LTS 20...

Virtual reality systems provide realistic look and feel by seamlessly integrating three-dimensional input and output devices. One software architecture approach to constructing such systems is to distribute the application between a computation-intensive simulator back-end and a graphics-intensive viewer frontend which implements user interaction. In this paper we discuss Metis, a toolkit we ha...

There is abundant literature regarding virtual reality as a technology of interest in the present age. However, there are few comprehensive studies on strategies that can improve the level of urban design research using this technique. To investigate the issue, this paper first reviews the concept of virtual reality. Next, the opinions of experts in the field of virtual reality technology are s...

This review presents current virtual reality based training simulators for hip, knee and other orthopaedic surgery, including elective and trauma surgical procedures. There have not been any reviews focussing on hip and knee orthopaedic simulators. A comparison of existing simulator features is provided to identify what is missing and what is required to improve upon current simulators. In tota...

This paper shows the effect of adding vibrations in a car cabin during driving simulation on driver perception. Actually, current dynamic driving simulators induce the simulator sickness and it still difficult for the driver to project himself in the virtual reality due to a lack of perception. To know the effect of vibrations on a subject, the effect of the whole body vibration must be defined...
